AT OAMARU
THE RAKER WINS KUROW CUP SILVER STREAK STAGES A COME-BACK The Kurow meeting, held. on the Oamaru course, was easily the most successful this up-country club has held during the past 20 years, and the attendance was one of the largest seen at Oamaru. The weather was fine but dull and cold. The track was in excellent condition, and fast times were registered throughout the programme. The racing was interesting, and backers were well on the mark, five first favourites scoring. The Raker, who has been racing very indifferently this season, scored a good win in the Kurow Cup. He was not hurried over the early stages, and then put in a good run over the last two and a-half furlongs. Petersham, the favourite, was asked to cover too much ground in the small field. The most popular win of the day was scored by the 11-year-old Silver Streak, who was the outsider of the field in the T. A. Munro Handicap. It was his first race for some months, and over the last two furlongs ho ran right away from the opposition and recorded a very easy win. Airline, a New Zealand Cup candidate, won the concluding event equally easily after missing the jump-out. and his rider losing both stirrup irons early in the race. The totalisator handled £13,561 10s. compared with £B,OBI 10s last year. TRIAL STAKES. £75. For horses that have not won a race to the value of £SO at time of starting. MUTES ON THE FIXTURE
[By St. Clair.] Green Gables was just an £IOO better fancied than Johnemby for the Trial Stakes, and they finished in the order as they were backed. After a long delay at the barrier the field was sent! away in a fair line, the favourite immediately taking up the running and leading round the far turn from Johnemby. On the far turn Portadown ran into second place, with Jolmemby and Pink Gauntlet next. This order was maintained racing across the top. and Green Gables was two lengths clear turning into the straight, where Johnemby got an opening next the rails. Green Gables ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Johnemby, who beat Poetic four lengths. Then Pink Gauntlet, My Song, Vaunt, and (Rora Hiko in a bunch.
Dranoel was sent out over £lO3 better favourite than Sir Hugh _in the Highweight Handicap, and again these two favourites ran first and second. From a prompt start Twenty Grand took charge-when the field settled down and led into the back from Crack o’ Dawn, Chirp, and Flame Queen, with the favourite near the tail of the field. At the far turn Twenty Grand was a good three lengths clear of Crack o’ Dawn, with Sir Hugh and Chirp next, and Master Dingle, Flame Queen, and the favourite moving up. Twenty Grand was two lengths clear of Crack o’ Dawn and Sir Hugh turning into the straight, with Dranoel next. At the distance Dranoel ran up and headed Twenty Grand, but over the final stages was challenged by Sir Hugh and Chirp. The favourite just hung on to beat Sir Hugh by a head, with Chirp and Flame Queen only heads away next; then came Master Dingle and Crack o’ Dawn.
Passing By was sent out £37 better fancied than the bradk’eted pair, Ladv Denise and Black Label for the Waitaki Harness Handicap, and won very easily Gleam. Little Kathleen, and Navy Lass failed to go away, and Ben Travis led through the straight from Black Label, Diviner and the favourite. There was no change in this order until passing the seven-furlong post, where Passing By ran into second place. Ben Travis and Passing By led round the far turn from Diviner, Black Label, Colleen Travis. Mirage, and Lady Denise. Approaching the home turn the favourite headed off Ben Travis and beat him home three lengths. Lady Denise was a length and a-haif away third, then followed Black Label, Mirage, and Colleen Travis.
In a five-horse field for the Knrow Cup. Petersham was backed down to a short odd,s-on price, being £2lO better fancied than The Raker. Cymric led Araboa through the straight, and at the seven furlongs was just clear of Straightdoll, with Petersham on the outside of the other two next. Round!ing the far turn Straightdell headed Cymric, and Petersham ran up on the outside of Cymric racing across the top. Straightdell was first into the straight from Petersham, and then The Raker ran up on. the outside of the favourite. In a great race home The Raker stayed on to beat Straightdell a neck, with Petersham a length away. Araboa was half a length away fourth, with Cymric beaten off.
Spear Thrust was-backed down to an odds-on price in the Hydro Hack Handicap. £256 better than Blazealong. The field was not set when the barrier rose, and Midguard got out a couple of lengths clear from Twenty Grand. At the far turn Midguardl was racing three lengths clear from Muscatine and Twenty. Grand, with Spear Thrust and Blazealong last. Midguard was still two lengths clear turning into the straight from Crack o’ Dawn and Prince Ruenalf, and Spear Thrust was moving up wide out on the outside. The "lastnamed, under pressure, finished very strongly, and just got up to beat Midguard by a head. Blazealong was a neck away third, with Twenty Grand half a length away fourth. The others were beaten off
Toro-Koura was sent out £136 better favourite than Night Pal for the T. A. Mu 1110 Handicap, and had every chance, but the rank outsider of the field, Silver Streak, won very easily and received a splendid ovation on returning to the scale. The favourite led out from Silver Streak, and two and a-half furlongs from homo the latter joined Toro-Koura and led him into the straight. Silver Streak drew away in the run home to win by two leimths from Straightdell, who boat Night'Pal a length. Toro-Koura was thrceleimtlis further hack. D b
Monowai was £72 10s better fancied than Sabu for the Hakataramca Harness Handicap, hut spoiled anv chance he had by breaking at the end of four furlongs, and Sabu, who led all the wav scored narrowly from Irish Dusk. The favourite was a little slow to strike his
gait, and Sabu led through the straight from Irish Dusk and Mirage. These three led all the way. After turning into the straight, Sabu, who was just in front of Irish Dusk, gradually forced the latter right to the outside of the course and beat him home two lengths. Mirage was three lengths away third, just beating Monowai. Lady Denise was a poor fifth. An objection lodged against the winner for boring out was sustained, and the placing of the two first horses was reversed.
Airline was £44 better favourite than Craiglea for the Gillies Hack Handicap, and though last away and his rider lost his irons early in the race, the former won very easily. Asia was first away and led Miltiades and Lord Midas along the back. Asia, Miltiades, Craiglea, and Airline were the leaders round the far turn,' and Asia was still in charge across the top from Craiglea and Airline. At the home turn Craiglea was inst clear of Asia and the favourite. Then the last-named took charge, and won going away easily by two lengths from Craiglea, with Tissue a similar distance away third, a head in front of Miltiades. Prince Flaneur was next.
