MEN'S HOCKEY
* OAMARU WINS WALKER AND HALL SHIEID This shield was presented for competition between the leading hockey clubs in Tiraaru, Ashburton, and Oamaru. Saturday was the first time in its 10 years of existence that a South Canterbury club has not played in the final. It was also the first time that the shield left the South Canterbury district. Oamaru won the right to play Thistle (Ashburton) in the final by defeating South End (South Canterbury) at Oamaru by 6 goals to 5 after extra time had been played. Oamaru met Thistle at Timaru on Saturday and eventually ran out winners by 3 goals to 1. All the Oamaru players gave of their best, but I. Sberwin (fullback) was the mainstay of the defence. His hard hitting saved Oamaru time and time again by turning defence into attack.
