FINED £SO

BREACH OF GAMING ACT Charged with being the occupier of a shop at 17 Manse street and using the same as a common gaming house, Isaac Henry Curtis (54) pleaded guilty in the Police Court this morning and was fined £SO. Detective Russell, who prosecuted, said that the defendant had twice previously been convicted on a similar charge, the last occasion being in 1932. , , ' , Detective Russell added that defendant had a small tobacconist’s shop and indulged in silver betting, but was verycautious, and if bets of any size came to him he placed them with bookmakers, taking a commission of Is 6d or 2s in the £. He was, the detective understood, in a poor way of business and had neither telephone nor wireless set in the shop. This morning the shop had been visited by the detective and defendant bad admitted having taken four small bets. Defendant, who was not represented by counsel, had nothing to say, and the magistrate (Mr J. R. Bartholomew), remarking upon the fact that there had been two previous appearances on the part of the defendant, fined him £SO, with 10s costs. A week was allowed him in which to pay the fine.
