PRAISE FOR REYNOLDS DENNISTON
Writing of Miss Ethel Barrymore’s production of ‘ The School forjScandal,’ Brooks Atkinson, in the ‘ New York Sunday Times,’ has something nice to say about the Dunedin-born actor Reynolds Denniston. “ There are also some good things in her company,” Atkinson says. “ Georgie Drew Mendum, head of the house of Barrymore, is acting Mrs Candour with all proper breeding. Sir Benjamin Backbite is played with the right vanity and fatuousness by Charles Trexler. In the enviable part of Charles Surface, Lowell Gilmore is giving an excellent performance that ought to capture the hearts of summer maidens in organdie dresses. Best of all, Reynolds Denniston, who has been playing detectives and run-of-the-mine parts for some time, is superb as Sir Peter. He is dry and witty, courtly and gallant; he ha's that rounded command of a party
in a play that gives a theatregoer unconscionable joy. After earning his living as best he could for some time, it must hearten an actor to know that lie is giving a thoroughly sound performance in a part that requires special knowledge and experience.”
