German airmen captured during the Lady Auckland, widow of Lord.Buckland and sister-in-law of Lord Camrose and Lord Kemsley, told him she went shopping and brought back a German airman, for whom a search had 156611 going on for nine days. The German had escaped by parachute when his bomber had crashed in flames. Describing the capture, Lady Buckland said; “I noticed a peculiarlydressed, man walking along the road, and told my chauffeur: 1 1 am Certain that man is a German. I think we had better stop and see.’ He had a revolver, and when. we asked him if it
were loaded he saic] ‘ Xca, but we da not shoot civilians.’ Jjso we let him keep his revolver and ammunition. , H< looked so docile and so tired and hungry. As we drove hint: to the polied station I asked him, ‘ Do. you Germani think that the British people will giv4 in?’ His reply startled me. It wasi 1 No, but I think the German people will.’ The police at the station wer* staggered when I brought him in. II was funny to see him produce his re. volyer, unload it himself, and^ hand all his cartridges over, so politely. H* was charming right to the end. ' When I left him with the police he bowed stiffly and said ‘ Thank you.’
