SOLD TO AID IN WAR EFFORT Mr Fred Ward, of the jewel house of Jcrwood and AVard, paid £24,400 at Christie’s on July 1 for the dazzling diamond necklace given by an anonymous woman in aid of the cost of the war effort. Asking for an opening bid of £IO.OOO, Mr Terrence M'Kcnna got it from many quarters of the packed room. Then Mr S. H. Harris called £20,000. The ultimate destination of the necklace cannot yet be known. “If I had been able to win it.” Mr Harris remarked. “ I should have been obliged to break it up.” Mr Aubrey Jones, the famous Jewel expert, said: “ The winners are sure to be able to sell the necklace speedily.” Unquestionably people are showing .more eagerness to buy diamonds nowadays, and crowds were inspecting the wonderful array of jewels to be offered later*
