RAILWAY WORKERS’ RESOLUTION.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —In view of your note to “ Democrat’s ” letter, my reply will necessarily be restricted. No surfaceman is in receipt of a sum as low as £2 17s 8d a week. The pay of surfacemen is £4 11s 8d a week, less 5 per cent, superannuation, 5 per cent social security, and 5 per cent, national security tax, a total of 13s 7d, leaving a balance of £3 18s. “ Democrat ” mentions a surfaceman with children. If he has two or three children his wages are increased by 4s or Ss a week family allowance, giving him a net income after tax deductions of £4 2s, or £4 6s. The great majority of surfacemen live in railway houses, and the rentals vary from 8s to £l. The average would he about 12s 6cl. The above facts should he sufficient to disprove “ Democrat’s ” charge that surfacemen are unreasonably treated.—l am, etc., „ 100 ter cent. Patriot. September 26.
