CO-OPERATION IN PACIFIC
CLOSER RELATIONS URGED DR SOY MAUD'S VIEWS WASHINGTON, September 24. i The Senate Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously approved a favourable report on amended treaties with Australia, New Zealand, and Canada, providing for direct negotiation between these countries and the United States in any disputes, rather than with Britain. A message from Now York states that Mr Roy Howard, in an article in the Scripps-Howard newspapers following his New Zealand and Australian trip, stressed that New Zealand and Australia should seek closer co-operation between the Empire and the United States in the Pacific. He said: * “ New ! Zealand and Australia are interesting political phenomena. Politicians’ and business men’s statements might cause a mistaken belief that these independent commonwealths are prepared to climb into Uncle Sam’s lap. Far from indicating disloyalty to the Empire, for which they are pouring out blood and treasure even more generously than in 1914, this attitude merely expresses their determination that the English-speaking way of life shall not be snuffed out should the worst happen and England fall temporarily. New Zealanders and Australians foresee a new significance in the United. States-Canadian Pact. In the meantime they face tho menace of totalitarianism and realise that their relationship with the United States docs nob differ greatly from that binding them to Canada.” ALL SUPPORT POSSIBLE AMERICAN LABOUR LEADER'S VIEWS BOSTON, September 25. (Received September 26, at 12.45 p.m.) Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, addressing the American Legion Convention said: American people feel that Britain’s victory is vital for United States security; consequently it would seem logical for Americans to extend to Britain and her heroic Army and Navy all support possible short of war.”
