“WHOLESALE GAMBLING"

PATRIOTIC RAFFLES CONDEMNED Y.W.G.A. MAKES STRONG PROTEST A strong protest against tlio increase of officially-sanctioned gambling in tbe form of raffles for patriotic purposes was lodged unanimously by those present at the annual meeting of the Y.W.C.A. last night. Mrs J. R. Fairbairn, who presided, asked the meeting’s approval of a resolution in this direction which had previously been passed by the board, claiming that the trend of matters in this direction was having a deleterious effect on the young people of to-day. “ You and 1,” she said, “ can give sixpence and think nothing more of it, nor look for any possible personal benefit. This is not so, as far as the young people are concerned, and I ask you to give your whole-hearted support to this condemnation of the wholesale gambling that is going on.” The resolution read as follows: — “ Wo, the members of the Y.W.C.A., Dunedin, view with grave concern the strong and increasing prevalence of officially sanctioned gambling and lotteries in the present appeal for funds for the rehabilitation of our soldiers. Believing that the atmosphere thus created is inimical to the moral and spiritual welfare of our young people, - we voice our protest against these methods of raising money. Wo would suggest that all our giving in connection with this war, which is being waged in the cause of freedom, honour, and truth, should be done in a straightout manner in gratitude for the high privilege of living in a peaceful land. We would urge all Christian organisations to take their stand against this evil that is undermining the moral and spiritual life of the people.” Tt was decided also that a copy of this resolution be sent to the national office in Wellington with a covering letter.
