OVER £2,400 DONATED

RECORD YEAR FOR STRAND SING £B,OOO FROM PREVIOUS NINE In nine of the 10 years the Dunedin Community Sing Committee has been holding functions, a total of over £6,000 has been donated voluntarily for charitable purposes. This season, with country concerts and sings, over £2,400 has ■been raised for patriotic purposes, and when the Army Queen funds appeal closes on November 2, the record hoisted will be an outstanding one, eclipsing all previous performances. Truly the work of this committee is invaluable to the city. Large sums have been amassed this year, and duly handed over to those organisations which it has been the object to assist from time to time. Outstanding was the Finnish appeal—a return of £4so—second only, to that for parcels for soldiers, which rose to £BB2 10s, but over a longer period. Red Cross and Order of St. John Joint Committee, £414 ; local Red Cross, £7O; Taieri flood relief, £77—these, with £245 from country sings at various times, illustrate the responses to appeals, and the appreciation of the excellent way in which they are made. For the past two weeks funds have been collected for the Army IQueen, and. with, these in hand, and fcmall expenses inet—the total climbs %bove £2,400. It should be emphasised that, apart from such expenses as advertising, theatre charge, music, and other small Stems, no outlay is required; no person receives payment. Messrs H. P. DesJnoulins, J. F. Hiraburg, and A. Pettitt (who succeeded Miss Rita Holmes) have been associated with the sing since its inception.' They deserve full credit for pieir work. ,
