TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT

NAVY QUEEN FUNDS BENEFIT Navy Queen funds benefited by a programme of events held last night by the Otago Table Tennis Association. Tho meeting was held in the Y.M.C.A. gymnasium, and comprised exhibition matches in which the New Zealand champions, 11. A. and A. R. Algic, took part, and a championship tournament. Two interesting exhibition singles and a doubles match were played. In the doubles game the Algio brothers, who hold the New Zealand, doubles title, were too experienced and steady for a hard-hitting pair in L. Howe and N. Brown, and won in straight sets. In the first singles the South Island singles champion, M. Friend, had more finish and accuracy than his less experienced opponent, Howe, who, however, took two sets by hard driving. In the principal exhibition match of tho evening the New Zealand singles champion, It. A. Algie, was matched against W. Fogarty, a semi-finalist in the national singles championship. Although Fogarty brought off many brilliant shots and drove effectively, lie could not match Algio’s brilliant placing, rock-like defence, and remarkable recoveries. Algio won in straight sets. Twenty-two selected players took part in the championship tournament, and many close and interesting games were witnessed. Tho winner was found in A. R. Algie, who played well throughout tho'evening. N. Brown was run-ner-up. —Exhibition Games.— R. A. and A. R. Algic beat L. Howe and N. Brown, 21-19, 21-19, 24-22. M, Friend beat L. Howe, 21-17,19-21, 7-21, 21-18, 21-14. R. A. Algie beat W.
