ANNUAL FESTIVAL Under the chairmanship of the Rev. E. P. Y. Simpson, the Taieri competitions festival was continued last evening in the Coronation Hall, Mosgiel. Results; — Piano Solo, 16 and under IS. Pour entries.—Joan Gibson 1, Helen Logie 2, Dorothy Mutch 3. The judge said that the winner’s tone quality was on the whole satisfactory, and a fair attempt was made at expression. Action Duet, in character, under 15. Three entries.—June Applegate and Thelma Jefcoate 1, June Tregilgus and Lois Pope 2, Shirley Stewart and Audrey Edmond 3. The judge remarked that there was some effective stage work and fine costuming in this section. The winners were artistic and had pleasing voices. The second prize winners showed excellent stagecraft, but -rer<- rot such a strong pair vocally. Piano Solo. 10 and under IS. I'our cii.ti*"S. —Miss Joy AVyjio Miss Lorua
Oliver 2, Miss Rae Geddes 3. Also competed : Miss Hilda White. The winner, the judge said, gave a creditable rendering of her solo. The competitors, whose nervousness caused them to fall short of their best, should persevere and not ho discouraged. Character Sketch, under 16. Two entries.—June Tregilgus 1, Audrey Geary 2. Both competitors, said the judge, wore of a very high standard and were to be congratulated. Plavctte, six players, 12 and under. 16. One entry.—Miss M. Swallow’s juveniles, ‘ Merrv and Bright,’ 1. The plavers were Betty Fairmaid, Billy M‘Cunu, Noelino Campbell, and Beverlcv Swallow. The judge said this was an enjoyable entry. The stage was well used. Action Song, in character, under 12. Ten entries.—The following wore recalled to Wednesday’s session Joan A 1 ‘1 lines. June Tregilgus, Hilary Mason, ami Hefty Applegate. Also competed ; Murray Edmond. Jack Geddes, Bruce M‘Gregor. Lois Pope, A r elma Lobb, and Claire Beattie. Humorous Recitation. 32 and under 10. Three entries.—tune Applegate 1June AValker 2, Hetty Tuuzelmau 3. Tins was not a very good class, the
judge, said. The winner had a pleasing personality, and brought out her points well. The competitor placed second showed promise. Piano Duct, 15 and under 18. Throe entries.—Joy AVylie and Lorna Oliver, and Rao Geddes and Dorothy Smellie (equal) 1, Allister Ryan and fan AVatt 3, Action Song, in character, 12 and under 15.—Recalls; Shirley M‘Rae, June Applegate, and Blair Thomson. Also competed: Shirley Stewart, Arthur Berry, Audrey Edmond, June Valpy, Margaret Stewart, and Katie Stewart. Character Sketch, 16 and over.—■ Airs D. AVornall-Smith 1. Miss M. Crossan 2. The only competitors. Tho judge said that both competitors had given good performances. Tho winner had a good sense of humour. This evening tho programme will consist of national dancing, juvenile songs, duets and pianoforte solos, adults’ pianoforte solos, ladies’ solo, and adults’ vocal duets and quartets.
