GERALDINE MEETING

PETERSHAM WINS PRESIDENT’S HEARTH AND ALL NIGHT AGAIN Favoured with another bright, sunny day, the Geraldine Racing Club's meeting was concluded before a record attendance for the course, and the totalisator handled £16,049 10s, compared with £11,397 10s on the corresponding day last'year, making £27,987 for the meeting, an increase of £8.626 on the 1939 figures. The course was slightly faster than on the opening day, and the racing was again interesting. The principal race was won by Petersham, runner-up to Night Dross on the opening day, who scored his first win since last April. Both All Night and Hearth repeated their first-day successes, but the latter had little to spare at the finish. Blazealong, who failed to win a race last season out of 19 starts, scored in the concluding event, and returned his backers an outsibe dividend, there being only £26 invested on his win chance. An accident in the second harness event about a furlong from the start robbed the first and second favourites of their winning chances. Oasis falling brought Clive Brook down over him and caused Manawai to lose nearly a furlong. The latter put in a wonderful performance to finish second after losing so much ground. A. Cranston, the driver of t Clive Brook, received a nasty shaking and required medical attention on returning to the enclosure. SECOND HURDLES HANDICAP, £135. NOTES ON THE FIXTURE [By St. Clair.] Sir Frederick was made nearly £7O better favourite than Leopardstown for the hurdle race, but spoiled his chance by indifferent jumping. Jewish Lad was at once taken to the front, and after jumping the hurdle opposite the stand was about five lengths clear from the favourite, with Leopardstown and Crack o’ Dawn next. As they raced to the far turn Master Dingle moved up alongside of Sir Frederick, and at the last hurdle they got on even terms with Jewish Lai, Leopardstow ll being three lengths away. Master Dingle led the favourite over the last hurdle, with Leopardstown next. The last named then threw out a strong challenge, and just got up to heat Master Dingle a short neck. Sir Frederick was three lengths away third, with Jewish Lew! half a length further hack fourth. The other pair were beaten off.

Green Gables was £7 better fancied than Circular Note for the Wainui Hack Handicap, with good support for both Safe Light and Wild Coon. The start was a bad one, the chances of Foxette, Maritimus, Urge, and Leighnor being completely spoiled, and Wild Career, Pink Gauntlet, and Circular Note got the best of it. After a furlong had been covered Circular Note and Pink Gauntlet were together in charge from Wild Coon and Green Gables. Circular Note and Pink Gauntlet wore still together turning for home, just clear of Green Gables, with Wild Coon, Safe Light, and Tissue next. The leaders ran wide on the turn, leaving an opening for Wild Coon, who shot through and won by three lengths from Circular Note, who beat Safe Light two lengths. Tissue, Pink Gauntlet, and Green Gables were next. • • * • There was little difference in .the betting on the machine between Glenora Boy (289), Roy Bun (278), and Petersham (271) in' the President’s Handicap. From a perfect start Night Dress and Petersham led passing the stand, then Combat and Petersham took charge turning out of the straight, with Night Dress and Night Hawk next. Passing the five furlong post, Night Hawk ran to the front and led Combat, Petersham, Night and Glenora Boy, with Passafdrm and The Raker whipping in the field. Night Hawk was just in front of Petersham turning for home, with Combat, Roy Bun, Swordstick, Night Dress, and Glenora Boy next. Petersham then took charge, and halfway down the straight wao challenged by'Swordstick, but held him off to win by two lengths. Passaform put in a fine run, and got to within a neck of Swordstick. Night Hawk, Night Dress, and Glenora Boy were next, and The Raker and Combat last. * • * ♦ Aurie’s Star was £l9 better backed than Canister, with Hamarfast nearly as well supported for the Domain Harness Handicap, but both favourites fared badly. Channel Fleet led oyer the early stages from the favourite, Clonard, Waikari Chief, and Reservist, and racing along the back there was no change in the three leaders. These leaders were racing in close order round the far turn and across the toil, and Channel Fleet was still in charge at the turn for home, Clonard, Aurie’s Star, Hamarfast, Reservist, Marco Polo, and Chelidon being in close attendance. Both Clonard and Aurie’s Star broke in the run home, and Chelidon got a bad run. Marco Polo beat Chelidon to the post by half a length. Hamarfast was two lengths away third, closely followed by Clonard, Aurie’s Star, and Channel Fleet. « • • * All Night was backed down to a short price in the Gladstone Hack Handicap, nearly £l5O better than Royal Lancer, and won very easily. Royal Refrain missed the jump out, and Lady Magellan and Royal Lancer were first out, but after two furlongs had been covered The Vulture took charge and led to the far turn from Royal Lancer, All Night, and Craiglea. Racing across the top the favourite and Royal Lancer joined The Vulture. then Royal Lancer dropped back and All Night just headed The Vulture as the straight was entered. The favourite ran home a comfortable winner by three lengths from Airline, who finished fast to beat Royal Lancer a neck. The Vulture was two lengths away fourth, then Sweet Mystery and Taxpayer. Hearth was sent out an odds-on favourite in the Stewards’ Stakes Handicap, being more than twice as well fancied as Toro-Koura, the second choice, who was left several lengths when the barrier rose. Raceaway and Hearth were smartest out, and after a furlong the former went on a couple of lengths clear from the favourite, with Nightcalm and Skyrena following in that order. Raceaway was three lengths clear of Hearth as they turned into the straight, but the favourite finished very strongly and just got up in the last stride to beat Raceaway half a head. Rebel Star was three lengths in front of Kilrobe, and Nightcalm a bad last. • # * * After his great .second on the first day, Manawai was backed down to a short price in the Winchester Harness Handicap, being £BS better fancied than Clive Brook, but the chances of both were spoiled by Oq,sis falling at the end of a furlong, Clive Brook falling over him, and Manawai, Reservist, and Grattanita being badly interfered with. Silver Grattan led Joe Perkin and Lorene Val into the back, the firstnamed being nearly a dozen lengths clear. Going to the far turn, Silver Grattan was still six lengths in front of Lorene Val and Joe Perkin, with the favourite making up his lost ground in good style. Silver Grattan was eight lengths clear from Manawai turning for home, and stayed on to beat him by four lengths. Karu was six lengths away third; Lorene Val and Captain Potts were- next, a long way back.

Great Night was nearly £65 better fancied for the South Canterbury Champion Hack Handicap than Fex - - riby, with Halt nearly as well backed. From an excellent start Platform and Ferriby led through the straight, but entering the back Whiphand headed Ferriby and the pair led Great Night, Halt, and Ferriby. Approaching the far turn the last-named got knocked back last, and Blue Abbev led Whiphand, Halt, Great Night, and Dranoel acros the top. Blue Abbey led Dranoel, Halt, and Great Night into the straight, the three last being Richelieu Pearl, Blazealong, and Captain Bruce. Blazealong put in a wonderful run from the distance and beat Dranoel a length and a-half, with Halt half a length away third. Grey Silk and Ferriby were close-up .next*
