FAST, EVEN MEET Both teams were short-handed for the first 10 minutes at Ellis Park. Mosgiel was the first to score, a snap cross by W. Steven being nicely picked up by Rogers, whq beat Harbourne with an easy shot. For a period Roslyn kept Mosgiel on defence, and, while Mills saved some good shots, the Roslyn forwards generally showed- poor finish. Mills brought off a great save from a penalty kick taken by Rutherford. Rogers next scored, following a pass by Davidson, but Roslyn rallied and combined play resulted in Chisholm beating Mills with a low drive. The second spell opened with Mosgiel attacking, Harbourne saving from Skinner and Davidson. Roslyn then missed a chance when Mills miskickod. Play was fast and open, with neither side having the advantage, until a sustained attack by Roslyn in which Chisholm, Rutherford, and Ramsay wore prominent, enabled the latter to beat Mills with a good shot. Mosgiel pressed for a period, but the hill team’s defence held with Wilson and Simpson doing sound work. During the final stages play was in favour of Roslyn, but the forwards failed to pierce the defence, and a fast and exciting game ended: Roslyn-Wakari ... ... ... 2 Mosgiel ... 2 Mr W. M. Smith was referee. THORN 1 SHIELD High School Old Boys and Caversham fought a battle royal at Tonga Park for the honour of holding the Thorn Shield for the first time. After two 45minute spells had left the scores at 3-all, extra time was played, and Old Boys scored 1 . ' BROWN TROPHY TO NORTHERN 1 s Northern defeated Maori Hill 5-0 in the initial game for the Andrew Brown trophy at Logan Park, the margin being*a fair indication of the respective merits of the teams. Maori Hill failed to produce sufficient understanding among its attackers to press boms the chances of scoring available in the decisive spell, although the ball was running for the side more than in the initial period. Northern’s forward line, allied to strong half-back play, carried the day comfortably. Prior to the game the teams stood in silence as -a mark of respect to the late Maori Hill centre half, whose father donated the cup for annual competition between these teams. Mr M. K. Haig (chairman of the O.P.AQ pro sented the trophy at the conclusion of play. With the wind in its favour Northern hoisted three goals in the first half, M'Lean (2) and MacFarlane being the scorers. Except for a few spasmodic breakaways, Maori Hill was penned in its own territory, strictly_ on defence. Montgomery, from the wing, was the only player to swing a dangerous shot to goal, and ho missed narrowly. In most cases the Hill forwards were hanging off too far, permitting the Northern hacks to clear unopposed. All three Northern goals were fine shots, wtell worthy of the result. There were some poor attempts to goal, however. Bcrtenshaw, with a nice shot from the outside right position, and Reynolds were the scorers in the second half, when Maori Hill showed more in the limelight, but could not press its attacks home. Hr J. Welsh controlled the game. MORNINGTON BEATS AIR FORCE Moruington was too good for the Air Force eleven in the curtain-raiser, earlier having its measure to win easing up by 3-0. ___ AUCKLAND RETAINS ENGLISH TROPHY [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND.
