BOXING

WELLINGTON AMATEUR TITLES [Per United Press Association.] WELLINGTON, September 22. Because many of last year’s performers bad joined the forces, the entries for the 1940 amateur championships, which were decided in the Town Hall last night, were not so numerous as in past years, nor was the standard as high as usual. Not a single champion in the senior or junior division was on hand to defend his title. Nevertheless, there was some prominent talent among the newcomers. The new senior champions arc:— Paper-weight, P. Oliver; bantamweight, L. Mulholland; light-weight, B. Murphy; welter-weight, B. Fairbrother; middle-weight, J. Imlach; feather-weight, D. Thwaites. GILDO AND RAYNER DRAW PALMERSTON N., September 22. A fast, willing 12-round contest between Young Gildo and Clarrie Rayner at the Opera House last night resulted in a draw.
