(Received September 23, at 11.50 a.m.) An intercepted German wireless message carried a Vichy dispatch asserting that British warships attacked a French naval squadron off Dakar and damaged one French vessel. The details are obscure. However, it is indicated that the French cruisers returned to Dakar because of the British superior gunpower. NO CONFIRMATION MELBOURNE, September 23. (Received September 23, at noon.) The Naval Board advises that there is no official confirmation of the New York message reporting the Vichy assertion that British and French naval vessels were in action off Dakar.
