CAMPAIGN FOR MILLION
PATRIOTIC COUNCILS' AIM MAJOR ABEL APPOINTED ORGANISER [Per United Press Association.] • I ~ September - The secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board (Mr G. A. Hayden) announced to-day that Major J. Abe), of Wellington, ' had been appointed honorary organiser of the Dominionwide campaign by provincial patriotic councils to raise £1,000,000. He said that' Major Abel had offered his services in this capacity, and they had been accepted with appreciation. The campaign had begun with an appeal for funds for the relief of victims of the German air raids on London, and will continue for the purpose of raising funds to give assistance when required to the United Kingdom and the British Empire overseas and to provide comforts for_ New Zealand troops overseas and within New Zealand. as well as to enable provision to be made for the rehabilitation of the men and assistance to their dependents. In making the announcement of ithe appointment Mr Hayden referred to the success Major Abel had achieved as honorary organiser' of the appeal conducted by the Joint Council of the Order of St. John and the New Zealand Red Cross Society for funds for tho sick, wounded, and distressed. More than £680,000 had been raised by this campaign, the result of which was due largely to Major Abel’s organising abilitv. He was sure the organisation of the campaign bv provincial patriotic councils was in capable hands. Major Abel is a member of tho National Patriotic Council, and for many years has participated in health and patriotic work.
