'QUIET WEDDING' ENDORSED BY REPERTORY MEMBER

A confirmed theatregoer in Dunedin, who was in England in 1938. was fortunate enough to witness the opening performance of ‘ Quiet Wedding ’ at Wyndham’s Theatre. London, on October 14 of that year. He reports that the play took London by storm. His own description of it is that it was easily the most enjoyable of all the plays he saw while at Home, and he saw everything that London bad to offer. The humour throughout was of a very high standard, nothing slapstick, but sheer good English humour. The play covers the activities of a very modern household for the 24 hours

prior to the wedding of the daughter of the bouse, and those who have had that experience can well imagine the turmoil tba/t exists on such an occasion. If one adds to this turmoil a mother whose every word is inconsequential, and who is quite determined not to ho bustled, but is, one will appreciate why a continual ripple of laughter was sustained throughout the play. Polite hilarity is, in fact, the keynote of ‘ Quiet Wedding,’ despite the serious plight of the lovers and the author’s dynamic, if not sensational solution of their difficuties. Dunedin is lucky in being afforded an opportunity of witnessing this very modern comedy, which will be the Repertory Society’s next production, opening on Wednesday next.
