UTILITY POULTRY CLUB
The dub held u very successful meeting on Monday in the Y.M.C.A. rooms. Each month there is a special, talk or lecture given by some qualified person. Mr Tibbies was the speaker on this occasion, his subject being ‘ Breeds.’ As there are more breeds of poultry than one has time to enumerate, the speaker illustrated his talk with coloured plates, drawings, and sketches. These gave members an idea .of how many breeds there really are. A picture of the first known fowl, 1500 b.c., disclosed a peculiar looking object with feathers only in its tail. After dealing with points, peculiarities, and value of several breeds, he went into detail on Rhode Island Reds and Australorps, two popular breeds of the present day. The Rhode Island Red, bo explained, must have the correct colour, which is a rich mahogany and not a chocolate, as often seen. The length and breadth of breast, length of back thigh, a good head, clear ('yes, and texture of wattles were all points to look for. The Australorps
should have light feathers, and the i length of body greater than depth. They should not he too Unify, the eye should be clear and hold, aud one should see '
the eye when standing behind the bird. Kept to type, those birds should not be confused wtih the Orpington. Mr Hanson (president) thanked Mr
