RAILWAY WORKERS’ RESOLUTIONS.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—“ Democrat ” in his ' reply to my letter of September 10 puts forward some very unreliable statements. He tells us that all workers receive concessions, which goes to prove that his knowledge of wages and conditions of thousands of general labourers is very limited indeed. All he knows of the subject seems to come to him from hearsay, an extremely unreliable source. His letter contains so many irrelevant statements that further comment is not necessary. ... “True Facts” in his letter gives quite an interesting explanation of a surfaceman’s position as regards wages and liabilities. He perhaps does not know that there are hundreds of surfacemen who pay less than £1 per week rent. Of the balance of wages, £2 17s Bd, “ True Facts asks if 1 could keep a wife and children in food, clothing, and firing on such an amount. Decidedly yes; I have kept them for years on less. , Your correspondent seems to be troubled bv what he imagines is the high cost of living, but perhaps he has not given a thought to the cost of high living, which may be the cause of his worries. I can assume from the fact that he has mentioned Children m his letter that he has a family of three, therefore he would be entitled to a further 8s per week as family allowance. With this assistance, in addition to his wages, I would say he would be in ft very nappy position. It is obvious to your readers that “ True Facts ’’has a very poor knowledge of the workings of the social security scheme. I still maintain that the members of the A.S.R.S. have not been doing the right thing in passing resolutions demanding a 10 per cent, at the present time, while other sections of workers were granted only 5 per cent, by the court. The statements I made in my previous letter referring to the fortunate position of the Hillside branch of the A.S.R.S. still stand.— I am, etc., „ 100 Per Cent. Patriot. September 20.
