NIGHT DRESS WINS THE CUP HEARTH BEATS GAY PARADE DOUBLE TO HAUGHTY The attendance at the Geraldine Racing Club’s meeting at Oran was the best on record, and the totalisator increase of £3,974 was over 50 per cent, on last year’s turnover. The turnover for the “clay was £11,847. Tho course was firm, but rough. Sight Dress was found in a galloping mood and won tho Cup well, scoring his first success for Mr W. Parsons, who had another winner earlier in the dav in Recollection. Night Dress was always well placed, and returned his backers a good price on the win machine. Glenora Boy was unlucky in being galloped on during the running, and may not start again at the raeetHearth scored very comfortably in the open sprint. Taxpayer was set too big a task to catch Halt in the Rankapuka Handicap, but finished strongly. Haughty, one of B. Grice’s team, won both light harness events very easily. She is a five-year-old mare by Nelson Derby from Regal Voyage.

NOTES ON THE MEETING [By Sr. Claik.] Recollection was £l7 10s better fancied than -Master Dingle lor the hurdle race, and alter waiting for Jewish Lad to the home turn scored very easily. After jumping the first hurdle Jewish Lad drew well clear from Donadca' and Crack o’ Dawn, and at the end of half a mile was nearly .six lengths in front of Master Dingle and Recollection, who were at the head of the others. Jewish,Lad’s lead was reduced as they raced along the back, and at the second last hurdle he was still three lengths clear of Recollection, with Master Dingle and Arita next. Recollection took charge at the home turn and won easing up by two lengths from Master Dingle, who beat Jewish Lad by a length. Arita was six lengths away. •

« * • • All Night was £10!) better favourite than Wild Coon, with Green Gables the only other starter fancied in the Ohapi Handicap. The start was a very bad one, Green Gables getting three lengths advantage, and the favourite was one of the last to leave the barrier. Green Gables led Camphor, Tissue, and Wild Coon round the far turn. Tissue got knocked back after two furlongs had been covered, and Green Gables was still three lengths clear turning for homo from Camphor with another gap to Wild Coon and All Night! The latter caught Green Gables 100yds from the post and beat her home by half a length. Wild Coon was three lengths away third, with gaps to Camphor and Richelieu Pearl. All Night’s performance was outstanding. but the winner’s success was largely due to the good horsemanship of L. J. Ellis. • » * • The Wrecker was the only withdrawal from the Geraldine Cup, for which Glenora Boy was £4O 10s better fancied than Roy Bun, with Passaform nearly as well backed. Combat took charge running through the straight, and at the end of two furlongs was four lengths clear of Nightdress, Petersham, Swordstick, Dunstan, and Night Hawk. Combat increased his advantake entering the hack stretch, but at the far turn was only two lengths in front of Petersham and Nightdress, with Night Hawk next and Glenora Boy moving up. Petersham caught Combat on the home turn, where they were just clear from Nightdress, Night Hawk, Swordstick, and the favourite. At the distance Combat was beaten, then Petersham challenged Nightdress, but the latter hung on to win by a length. Glenora Boy was three lengths away third, then came Roy Bun, Combat, and Night Hawk. ♦ * * * The Ben Travis-Haughty bracket. Happy Man. and Aurie’s Star wore almost evenly backed in the Geraldine Trot. Paddy Pointer led through the straight from Lady Truman. Wee Truman, and Aurie’s Star, Happy Man running right to the outside of ■ the course. Going along the back Lady, Truman, Happy Man, and Aurie’s Star were in charge, Passing By losing ground by breaking near the six furlong post. Lady Truman led round the far turn from Aurie’s Star. Happy Man. Haughty, and Passing By, also across the top and into tho straight. Hanpy Man was in front for a few strides, then Passing By and Haughty ran past, and the latter staying on bettor beat Passing By bv two 1 lengths. Hapny Man was four lengths away third, then came Auric’s Star, Clonard, and Hamarfast. « • * » Taxpayer was £l3 hotter fancied than Airline for tho Raukapuka Handicap. hut neither had any chance with Halt, who had only £lO 10s invested on his win chance, and returned a big dividend. The Vulture, Muscatine, and Lady Magellan were slow to begin, and Raceaway led Halt. Dinah Dim, and Cymric along the back, Taxpayer being several lengths away. Airline moved up going to the far turn and followed Raceaway and Halt across the top, where Taxpayer began a forward move. Halt caught Raceaway at the home turn, and in the run home drew away to win by four lengths from Airline. who beat ’Taxpayer by three lengths. Raceaway, Blue Abbey, and Cymric were next.

Hearth was £B7 better fancied for tlie Squatters’ Handicap than Kilrobe, and won well. Kilrobe held up the start for some time, and with Gay Parade and Skyrena led Hearth and Toro Koura round the far turn. Skyrena dropped out across the top, and Kilrobe Jed Gay Parade into the straight, with Hearth alongside and Skyrena next. inside the distance Hearth headed Kilrobe, and won by a length from Gay' Parade, who beat Toro Koura by two lengths. Kilrobe was next.

Penalised only 12yds for Ids former win, Haughty was made £lO-1 better favourite than Great Waitaki for the Orari Harness Handicap, and, driven patiently for a mile, won easier than in the first race. Irish Dusk, Great Waitaki, and Silver Grattan abreast Jed Captain Potts and Lorone Val through the straight, then Irish Dusk ran out in front from Great Wailaki, Manawai, and Titus. After rounding the far turn in this order the favourite began to move up on the outside, and turned into the straight wide out almost on terms with Irish Dusk, Great Waitaki, and Manawai. Taking charge at the distance, the favourite won by throe lengths from Manawai. who beat Irish Dusk by a neck, then a gap to Lorene Val, Silver Grattan, and Oasis.

Iceland Spar was £2S 10s better fancied than Dranoel in the Helfieid Handicap, which easily provided tiie best race of the day. Whiphand led Ferriby and Grey Silk through the straight, and as they raced along the hack Whiphand was three lengths abend of Ferriby, with Grey Silk and Dranoel next. Going to the far turn both Ferriby and Dranoel lost their positions, and Whiphand led across the tops and into the straight, just in front of Great Night. Grey Silk, and Iceland Spar. At the distance Iceland Spar was just in front, and over the last 50 yards was challenged first by Dranoel and then by Ferriby, who got a bad run in the straight, the favourite finishing mneli better than at Ashburton and staying on to beat Dranoel by nearly a length, with beads to Ferriby and Great Night.
