BOWLINS NOTES
[By Dkaw.] Questions and Answers. “ Local. - ’—The two lawns are the property of the Ladies’ Association and are not in any way connected with the Logan Park Club, which has its own playing area, situated just a little nearer to Union street than the greens of the Ladies’ Association, which are immediately north of the Logan Park green; in fact, the two areas are separated by only a few feet. “ North-e’nder.”—-1 understand the ooint raised has been discussed by the local association and a copy of the matter under discussion has been sent to similar bodies in the Dominion. I would suggest that you attend the next meeting of the Umpires’ Association, when the matter will bo under review. (The Umpires’ Association meets in the Caledonian Society’s board room on Friday. September 27.) Otago Ladies’ Bowling Association. Next Wednesday it is proposed to open the association’s lawns at Logan Park at 2 o'clock. Mrs G. Columbus is president and Mrs E. E. Stubbs secretary. Club Openings. Saturday, October s.—Kaituua and N.E. Valley Clubs. Saturday, October 12.—Anderson’s Bay. N.Z. Bowling Council. In the minutes of the council’s excutivo meeting held recently the Pioneer Sports Club, of Christchurch, and the Automobile Association, it is stated, Lave extended privileges to bowlers attending the New Zealand championships in January. This fine gesture will be appreciated by the bowlers of the Dominion. Increases in Membership. Many clubs in the Dunedin Centre report an increased membership. The St. Kilda Club has a larger membership, and even with the addition of the “ Marlow ” green this club will not have much spare space. Anderson’s Bay Club has eight new members, and it is pleasing to know that tills club’s playing area is showing up well, and by opening day it should be in splendid order.
It would not be surprising if the total membership of tho Dunedin Centro this season shows a substantial addition on that of last season, which itself was a record for club membership. Dunedin Bowling Centre.
At tho executive meeting on Saturday many matters concerning the incoming season will come up for discussion. Bowlers will be looking forward to the report .of the Draw Committee, and it will be interesting to note if the zoning method will receive attention. Private car owners in the bowling community have in tho past done splendid work in transporting their fellow-players, but this season there are petrol restrictions, and it is not reasonable to ask car owners to use their meagre supplies of petrol on players. If an attempt is made to zone even parts of the Saturday competition, the committee in charge is sure to have the support ,of all reasonable persons. It is likely that zoning will be adopted in connection with the Holmes Feathers games, and this competition offers no particular objection to such a system being adopted, even for the incoming season only. * New Zealand Bowling Tournament. Posters, circulars, and a list of hotels, with their prices, have been issued by the secretary of the council (Mr Oakey). The circular provides all the information that is necessary. _ The tournament will open with the singles on Wednesday, January 8, 1941, and entries for all events close on Monday, December 2, 1940, and all entries must be made on the special entry form, which may be obtained from club secretaries or centre secretaries. All bowls used during the tournament must have one of the following stamps (test) ; 1934, 1936, 1938, or 1940. A list of hotels, public and private, has been distributed to secretaries of all clubs, and the rates vary from 6s 6d to 25s a day. Special concessions may be obtained by bowlers and their families —10 per cent, off steamer fares and 20 per cent, off first class railway fares. Players requiring any further information regarding the championship tournament should get in touch with the secretary, Mr H. B. Oakey, P.O. Box 689, Christchurch. Tho prize money totals £BO 17s, and each competition allows for first, second, third, and fourth prizes. Any profit arising out of the tournament will be handed to some patriotic appeal, and as it is the intention of the Tournament Committee to curtail entertaining expenses it is reasonable to expect that a considerable sum will be realised.
