GOLF NOTES

[(By Slice.]

Otago Club. In the medal handicap played on Saturday last the conditions were good for golf, and the scoring, which was noteworthy for its closeness, was well up to tho recent standard, no fewer than seven players returning net scores below par, with five others equalling it. The competition was for a trophy presented by tho club captain (Mr J. R. Callender), and this was won by W. Fraser Edmond with an excellent card of 77 9 —68. His success was well deseryed, as ho was runner-up in the previous stroke event, and is right on his game at tho present time. His net score was five below par, and one stroke better than his nearest opponent, J. G. Dick, who also gave a taste of his calibre in returning a very meritorious 73—4 69. Next in order were R. F. Barr (7) and A. M. Cameron (14) with net 70’s. No less deserving cards were those of A. H. Bovd (4) 71, .1. N. Lemon (2) 72, and A. R. Woods (6) 72. The best gross score (73) was credited to J. G. Dick, followed bv (J. N. Lemon and T. W. Wight with 74. St. Glair. The monthly medal match played last Saturday resulted in some good scores being carded. The course was in ideal condition, although a light shower about midday tended to slow the greens and made putting conditions variable. N. W. Allen (11) rekied off a 79, for a net 68, and set the rest of the field in the A section a fine example. W. W. Clayton (2) and W. N. Satterthwaite (12), with net 72’s, tied for second place. The latter has been showing some of the form which earned for him a single handicap last summer. Bill Clayton has been playing consistently well of late, and it will he no surprise if ho turns in some good scores in the near future. H. S. Ross (5) and H. J. Rackley (8) with 73, also played steady golf to their respective handicaps. A. Jones, juu. (19), has been figuring prominently in all the recent matches, and on present form is playing well below his handicap. With a net 70 he won the B section from his brother, N. L. Jones (19), who had a net 71. Both those boys are playing well, and have good styles, and with further practice and match experience will have little difficulty in reducing their handicaps considerably. D. H. Blackie 88—16 —72, D. L. Scott 90—17—73, and T. W. Grimsdale 90—17 —73 all played well up to their handicaps. The club championships start this month, the first qualifying rounds being played on September 28 and the second on October 5. _ . Excellent entries are being received for the open event on September 29, two rounds of four-ball bogey play. This is open to members of all affiliated clubs, and starting times may be arranged with the professional. Members are asked to give this match their support, as the proceeds are to be given to queen carnival patriotic funds. Recent reductions in handicap are:— N. W. Allen 11 to 10, A. Jones, jun., 19 to 18, N. L. Jones 18 to 17, "W. N. Satterthwaite 12 to 11. Macandrew Bay. In the semi-final matches for the knock-out cup, J. W. Allan secured an easy win over J. W. Manson by 4 and 3. The other match, between G. White and F. Waller, resulted in a very close game, and the win was secured by White at the seventeenth. The knock-out plate competition has now reached an interesting stage, and those left are H. Morrow, A. C. Penny, J. W. Manson, F. Waller, D. H. Morris, and R. Twose In last week’s match os H Morrow had no difficulty in eliminating S. Whitburn, 3 and 2. The match between R. L. Blair and A. C. Penny resulted in a win for the latter, 1 up, after being 2 down with 3 to play. Blair is playing bettor golf at present, and should be prominent in the junior championship. R. Twose successfully accounted for C. Dickinson. This coming week-end the club will send a team consisting of F. Waller, J. Allan, C. Palmer, and W. E. Ruff to Balmacewen to compete for tho Brasch Cup between the country clubs. As the club is at present the holder of this trophy, all members are keen to see this year’s team successfully defend possession. Allan and Ruff took part in the match last year, and the two newcomers should give a good account of themselves. F. Waller has proved that he can play well to his Australian handicap of 4. J. C. Palmer has been playing consistently well of late. It was disappointing that L. S. Churchill, who played so well last year, had to withdraw from taking part, due to the influenza. vhisholm Park. As usual, the annual match between teams selected by the president and captain created a good deal of interest, and the games were keenly contested. The honours rested with the former, his side emerging with a 6 to 3 victory. The Roarers’ Mug matches were postponed until to-day.
