ST. ANDREW SOCIETY
The literarv section hold its monthly meeting on Tuesday night, Mrs Morrison, president, being in the chair. Tho Rev. J. Pringle gave an address on • James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd,’ q poet of humble life like Robert Burns and one who was largely self-taught, his total schooling being about six months, yet with a passion for selfimprovement, he became conversant with the works of the poets, and wrote poems with felicitous expression. His Jacobite songs are comparable with those of Ladv Nairne.
The Rev. W. W. Macarthur spoke of several other Scottish poets who were deep thinkers and of sympathetic temperament. Mrs A. M‘lvor sang Gaelic song*. Miss Somerville ‘ Cam’ Ye By Athol ’ (by James Hogg), and Miss 'Tardine read ‘ Kilmeny ’ (also bv the Ettrick - Shepherd). A vote of thanks was accorded the speakers and entertainers.
