[From Ode Correspondent] At Lawrence on Saturday a friendly match was played between Lawrence and Toko. (Milton). The game was an evenly-contested one, and resulted in a win for the home team by 6 points to 0. At a meeting of. the Roxburgh Returned Soldiers’ Association Committee, it was decided to hold the annual reunion on Saturday, September 21. Representatives of the Dunedin Executive will be present, as well as representatives from all other associations. The Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Choir will be represented by a quartet party. It was decided that invitations be sent to the Mavor of Roxburgh, Messrs J. Bennetts, and J. George (Tuapeka County) and a representative from the Roxburgh Territorial Association, the Territorial Platoon, and the Roxburgh Band. During their visit members of the Dunedin Executive will be conducted over the whole area of the Roxburgh Returned Soldiers’ afforestation scheme at Roxburgh East. The official opening of a new manual training department, which was built at a cost of £2,500, was held at the Roxburgh District High School on Friday. There was a large attendance. The chairman of the School Committee (Mr H. S. Glendinning) welcomed Mr W. A. Bodkin, M.P., and Messrs C. E. Richards and E. Morgan, of the Otago Education Board. Mr Glendinning stated that the opening of the new building was a red-letter day for the school, because after having overcome many difficulties, the committee was now more than gratified that the children of the district would enjoy the same educational facilities as those to be found in the cities. Mr Bodkin congratulated the district on its new acquisition, and said that the children ■ would have all the facilities necessary to equip them for the positions in civic life that they were to occupy. The Mayor of Roxburgh (Mr F. A. Laloli) also congratulated the committee, and expressed full confidence in the staff and the future of the school. Mr J. H. Waigth, sen., the secretary of the committee, Mr C. S. G. Nicholson, and Messrs Richards and Morgan spoke on similar lines. Mr Richards, who is the local representative of tiie Education Board, presented the keys of the building to the chairman. TUAPEKA COUNTY COUNCJL. The monthly meeting of the Tuapeka County Council, held at Lawrence on Friday, was presided over by the chairman (Mr R. S. Thompson). The clerk (Mr R. F. Batchelor) reported that the receipts for the month were £1,587, and that accounts for payment amounted to £2,441. The credit balance at the bank at August 31 was £1,269, with the addition of £SOO on fixed deposit. The chairman of the Finance Committee (Mr I. D. Revie) added that there was also £1,500 on fixed deposit in the plant renewal fund. The district representative of the Main Highways Board (Mr P. Keller) advised that the following amounts have been provdied for in the Main Highways Estimates for 1940-41, all subsidies at the rate of £3 for £1: —Rae’s JunctiqnM'Nab, £9OO for maintenance; Edie-vale-Rae’s Junction. £6B for improvements to corners; Bald nth a-Lawrence, £577, maintenance; Willowbank-Mathe-son’s Corner, £450, maintenance; Wil-low-Heriot, £SO. sealing; Tapanui railway station highway, £45, maintenance; Roxhurgh-Miller’s Flat, £495, maintenance; Waipahi-Pomnhaka, £75, maintenance; Miller’s Flat railway station highway. £ss, maintenance; KclsoTapanui, £l2o, maintenance.
