NOTES ON IKE FIXTURE (Special to the Star.'l The attendance must have been a record and the totalisator turnover was the largest recorded for some years. The course was in excellent order without being hard, and fast times were general. The principal event, the Ashburton Handicap, was won by the favourite. Winning Rival, whose previous success was in the Dunedin Guineas last October. She overhauled the pacemaker, Entail, a furlong from home, and stalling off a challenge by Glenora Boy she won well by half a length. Settlement, one of the rear division for most of the journey, executed a telling effort over the final stages, and only just failed to brat Glenora Boy. In another few strides he would probably have won. Sovereign Lady, looking likely early in

the run home, weakened nearing the post into fourth place, a neck away, in front of Petersham. Entail, and The Wrecker The Raker was always in last place. Class was strongly represented in the Spring Handicap, the (bid including Royal Chief, Willie Win, Tom-Ivina .i . Passal'orni, and Shikari, and although none of these loo's part .in the finish their presence eri:iced much interest. The race was vein by Roy Run. owned by .Mr T. hi. Coates, of G-rc\ mouth, and trained at. Ricearton by M, ('ou/n. Rebel Star was well clear entering the straight, but was in trouble a few chains from the post, where he was tackled by Night Hawk. Hoy Bun then came from well back with an electrifying rim, and this soon placed him in a winning position, his win being one of the easiest of the day. In a close tussle for second money Night Hawk beat'Rebel Star. Royal Chief, who was never far away, made a promising forward move on the fence halfway down the straight, but although his effort was very satisfactory he was two lengths away in fourth ‘place at the post. The favourite (Shikari) was slow away after rearing up several times before the rise of the barrier, and in spite of being in a handy position turning for homo he made a very poor attempt. Toro-Koura acted' as pacemaker with Night Hawk for the first half of the journey, and was prominent until well into the straight. Willie Win was the _ last away, and did not improve his position to any extent. Passafonn put up a similar performance, but this pair should benefit from the race. Night Dress ran a sound race, and hi? winning turn is not far off. Rebellion was never near the firing line. ,

Jewish Lad was sent out favourite for the Countv Hurdles, but after leading for six furlongs, he lost ground through a bad jump, and Sir Frederick carried on for an easy win from the novice Lepbardstown, who was having his first race over hurdles. Master Dingle, who jumped badly over the early fences, finished very fast into third place. Land Raid looked dangerous at the last fence, but did not carry on. • • » • Pleading was considered to have a mortgage on the Novice Stakes, but once'again he failed to run on. He drew to the front a furlong from home, and just when he looked to have the issue in hand, Royal Lancer ran past him, and the latter had no trouble in beating him home. Jolly Time, always well np, was a fair third, lidding on to beat Sweet Mystery by a head. Wild Coon headed the remainder. Royal Lancer’s win makes him ineligible to start in the Ohapi Hack Handicap at Geraldine on Thursday. * • * ♦ Don’t Forget, backed down to a short price in the Chatmos Hack Handicap, had an easy task. Beginning smartly, he was always in a commanding position, and won easing up from Night Glass, who finished in an encouraging manner. Airline was a fair third, two lengths in front of Dinah Dhu and The Vulture. Don’t Forget is undoubtedly a speedy galloper, but it is doubtful if he will master much ground.

C. Emerson, trainer of Don’t Forget, also led in Prudent Prince, winner of the following event, the Penscroft Hack Handicap, which the gelding, then trained by F. D. Jones, won 12 months ago. Ferriby gave a taste of what he is capable of doing when in a galloping mood, by going to the front early and leading into the straight, but in the run home he was passed by Dranoel, and then Prudent Prince put in his claim to wear down Dranoel in the last few strides. Ferriby was a close third, a neck in front of Iceland Spar, who did not perform up to expectations. Blue Abbey was next.

The two trotting events on the programme both provided interesting races.. In the first, the Selma Handicap, Happy Man essayed to win from the early stages, after being one of the last to move off, and when he entered the straight well clear of Wainoni Jack, driven by the veteran F. H6lmes, his success seemed assured, but the latter wore him down to beat him in the last stride. Hamarfast was a fair third, two lengths in front of Turret. Braw Lass won the Rakaia Handicap practically from end to end. She was followed into the straight by Burt Scott and Clive Brook, and carried on to beat Burt Scott comfortably, with Clive Brook a good third, a length in front of Panquitch. The favourite, Mortlake, lost ground early through narrowly missing a fall.
