WAR AND THE 40-HOUR WEEK.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —When I read “ Health First’s ” letter in your night’s paper, I thought the writer was poking fun at the 40-hour week, but on reading the balance-of his letter, came to the conclusion that the poor chap was really in earnest. It is almost an insult-to us New - Zealanders to learn that our physique is so poor we cannot possibly stand up to more than 40 "hours, whereas the men and women in England are standing up to nearly double. As an athletic man, 1 say emphatically that New Zealanders have splendid stamina, as witness thoir fine efforts in the Great War, and, lastly, a local proof in that 48 young fellows started in that hard road race. Port Chalmers to Dunedin—eight miles—-and wonderful to relate, everyone finished the distance. —I am, etc., September 13, . Tn Kuri.
