QUEEN CARNIVAL

VICTORY STREET DAY APPEAL BOYS’ PARADE IMPRESSIVE MOCK COURT FOR NEXT WEEK The “ victory ” street appeal day held yesterday, one further step, in the drive for funds for the rehabilitation of soldiers after the war, resulted in the collection of £540 from various sources. Perhaps the keynote of the day was the parade of youth through the city late in the afternoon, when hundreds of spectators turned out to see the lads march along with military precision. The Otago Boys’ High School, the King’s High School, the King Edward Technical College, and the Christian Brothers’ High School furnished the personnel of an impressive procession which formed up at the Queen’s Gardens and paraded along Princes street through George street to the Hospital, and back to the Octagon, to the accompaniment of the pipes and their own bugle bands. The young marchers acquitted themselves very well, and the boys of the King’s High School in particular compelled admiration by their military precision and general bearing. The army tank and the naval cruiser, symbols of the services represented by the two queens, were also features of the procession. ARMY OF COLLECTORS. More than 200 collectors were busy on the streets during the day, some of them commencing as early as 7 a.m. In the evening the Commercial Travellers’ Association took over to carry on until 9 o’clock. Citizens were invited to make a direct contribution to the funds, and those who gave Is were presented with a paper badge, while those donating 2s 6d were given metal flag pins and badges. Two thousand of- these tokens netted £250. The proceeds from the sale of all badges during the daytime will be divided equally between the two city queen candidates, Miss Jessie M'Lennan (Navy) and Miss Airini. Grennell (Army), and in the evening there was competitive selling by the rival queen organisations. THE CASINO. The Casino, with a well-varied programme of games and novel features, reopened its doors at 7.30 and had a busy evening till closing time. The proceeds from this week-end’s sessions will be devoted to the candidature of the Army Queen, who was in attendance last night and contributed to the evening’s entertainment. The Casino will be open again to-night. Next Friday and Saturday the Navy Queen will take charge. AIR FORCE QUEEN’S TOUR. The tour of the Central Otago districts by the Air Force Queen (Miss Mary Pratt) was continued with a concert and community sing at Roxburgh on Thursday, when the queen and her five countesses attended. The party received an ovation from a large audience. A number of articles were auctioned and the total, financial results of the function were very satis-factory-—£lo2 being : raised with other sums still to come in. ...

Before, the queen left Roxburgh for Alexandra and Ornakau, a ceremony took place at the District High School. Miss Pratt was received by the head master before inspecting a guard of honour. All the children of the school were lined up in the grounds, and the head master explained to them ■ the reason for the queen carnival. The head prefect (Lynn Stockdill) then conveyed a vote of thanks to the queen and her party, after which the. latter was kept busy signing autographs. Miss Pratt and her countesses were the guests of honour at a reception at Alexandra yesterday, when they were met by the mayor (Mr J. Bringans) and a large representation of members of the Patriotic Committees of Alexandra, Earnscleugh, and the surrounding districts. Miss Pratt was presented with a mascot, which had been made in the district, and later the party travelled to Ornakau, where a largelyattended concert and dance was held in the evening. AUCTION AT PALMERSTON. At Palmerston stock sale yesterday a sheep presented by Mr H. S. Sheat, of Bushey, was sold by auction for the benefit of the Air Force Queen’s campaign. On several occasions buyers handed the sheep back to be sold again, and at total of about £6O was taken as a result of the effort. NAVY QUEEN’S ACTIVITIES. Another one of the popular Navy sings will be held on Tuesday in the St. James Theatre. Mr J. M'Farlaue will lead the sing. Novelty features are being arranged to ensure an attractive and entertaining programme. Reserved seats are obtainable at the D.I.C. booking office. The Navy Committee has established headquarters at 144 George street (telephone 11-473). Art union tickets are obtainable, and donations and goods may be left there daily. A MOCK COURT. Friday next should be an interesting day in the city, for there is to be a mock court held “ somewhere in the city.” Who will be the judge? That all-important post has not yet been filled. Citizens with misdemeanours, real or imagined, against their names, will be brought before the court and a monetary fine imposed. There'will also be a copper trail from one end of the city to the other—the longer the better, so it is up to everyone, young and old, to help make it grow.
