Otago Club. The St. Andrew’s Cross Bogey Handicap, played last Saturday, did not produce anything sensational in the way of high scoring, but this may be attributed to the unfavourable weather and also to the variable putting conditions, the greens being tricky and callin'; for more judgment than usual. In the A grade there was a triple tie between J. N. Lemon (2) , R. W. Dick (5), and P. S. M'Kcnzie (7), with the modest score of 2 down, next in order being J. T. M'Corkindale (7), 3 down, and A. Lucas (2), A. H. Boyd (3), and A. R. Woods (5), with 4 down. In the B grade the cards were only slightly better. E. G. Boddy (9) was the winner, with 1 down, A. _M. Cameron (11) being run-ner-up, with 2 down, followed by G. B P. Wilson (11), 3 down. The annual country clubs’ day will be held on September 22, when teams of four players will, take part in one round of stroke play on handicap for the H. Brash Cup. The Otago Club will supply players from its own members to play with and act as markers, and entries for this popular competition close with the secretary,,Mr W. G. Wight, on Monday, 16th inst. St. Clair. ; Owing to_ the inclement weather the monthly medal .match scheduled for last Saturday was postponed. Nevertheless, a few hardy and enthusiastic players braved the conditions, and in a fourball bogey arranged by the professional (Mr Milliner) T. G. Butler and C. Osborne, with 2 up, had an easy victory from the rest of the field-. The first two qualifying rounds for the club championships will be played on September 28, and October 5. on the 29th of this month a special all-day open match, two rounds of four-ball bogey play, will be held. This event is for the purpose of raising funds for the queen carnival patriotic appeal. Members of all affiliated clubs are invited to enter for this match, players to arrange their own fours, and starting times may be arranged with the club’s professional.

Belleknowes. In the. semi-finals of the four-ball “ knock-out ” competition the matches were keenly fought and the wins were hard earned. G. Bell and J. C. Paul had a very close game with F. B. Clarke and O. J. Cooke, and at the final hole they were all square. According to the rules a further nine holes have to be played, and it was over this portion of the journey that Bell and Paul had the edge on their opponents, and victory came their way by a margin of 2 up at the twenty-sixth. In the match between W. Anderson and S. J. M'Gausland and W. S. Roberts and S. A. Stannard the latter pair were generally on top for most of the way, and at the thirteenth had established a useful lead of 3 up. At the fourteenth Roberts three-putted to lose a hole that but a moment earlier looked like a possible win or at least as good as halved, and it proved the hole which meant all. Anderson and M'Gausland then came with a late run, and at the seventeenth the unexpected happened when M'Causland splendidly holed a classic putt for a 3 to square the match. Tliey faltered, however, at the vital hole, when both missed fairly easy putts for 4’s, and the scales turned against them when their opponents were equal to the occasion, and Roberts and Stannard got

out of a tight corner by the narrowest of margins Congratulations are extended to Clarke and Cooke and Anderson and M'Causland on reaching the semi-finals, as in doing so they laid low some very worthy opponents. However, their turn will come again. The final should prove a very interesting encounter, and the issue is very, open. Next Saturday a four-ball bogey handicap is on the programme, and entrie* are to be made in fours. Chisholm Park. Heading the list of the qualifiers in the senior championship are George and Jack Burns, (father and son). This must be almost a unique achievement in local golf for many years past, and it is quite on the cards that this pair will meet in the finals. Reeling off th» second nine holes in 35, J. Burns takes premier position in the qualifiers, and considering the continuous rain last Saturday, this effort_ of two over pat; figures must be acclaimed a fine effort.. H. Riddell and D. Sime, after their good initial rounds, slipped badly in tha second round but managed to qualify. G. Mora finished with a tidy 78, and on present form will be a strong contender.

Playing consistently throughout, R... Steele easily led the intermediata qualifiers, and his powers as a matcli player are well known. After an absence from the game L. Wright went surprisingly well. R. Pollock came in with a fine second round'to secura second place in the list, but even then his aggregate was five below Steele’s. In the junior grade the outstanding performer was J. Dvkes, who played consistently throughout to card an B£. He has an attractive style, and should ge much further in the game. The surprise packet in this section was thn sterling performance of D. M'Kenzie, who tied for eighth place. Only commencing the game this year he has had no outstanding scores to date, but ha 3 come on to his game at the right moment and thoroughly earned his right to participate in the match play which follows.

The Trengrove Cup competition was completed on Saturday, when none of the likely players,' under the prevail* ing conditions, could make any impression on the score of E. Roche who was the winner with an aggregate of 162* This br.ndsome cup presented by Mr J. Trengrove. was won jointly last season by Messrs J. Burns and A. Anderson with scores of 158.
