MEN'S Hockey

_____ Uy Half. 1

University A. At its meeting on Monday last the association decided to close the senior competition, and University A were declared winners of the Gilray Cup for the 1940 season. The team, which was outstanding in the competition, is to be congratulated on the standard of play shown by it throughout the season. No other team in the competition approached its level. Its strong point was its team work, and as a combination it was the best club team seen in action in Dunedin for some years. While it won most of its matches by team play, individually in some cases it was brilliant. When it is remembered that of the five forwards who did such good work against the renowned Canterbury defence recently four were from the University team, it will be seen that this team's attack was formidable, while on all occasions it was ably assisted by the defence, which, if not brilliant, was at all times solid, steady, and reliable.

Civil Service (Invercargill) v. Albany. For keenness among the players Invercargill clubs take some beating. Last Saturday the Civil Service team journeyed to Dunedin to try conclusions with the Albany senior eleven. Unfortunately owing to the lateness in the season and the consequent waning of interest, along with other unavoidable circumstances, Albany was not at full strength, and suffered defeat by 7 goals to 2. By its superior speed and better team play Civil Service deserved its win. The chief weakness of the Albany team as fielded was the lack of penetration by the forwards, who elected to work as individuals instead of attempting to combine as a line. The defence of the team also lacked solidness.

Notes. In the junior competition, Albany, University C, and Y.M.C.A. are within striking distance of the winning position, and there is a possibility of the competition having to bo carried on till the last Saturday of the month before the winner is found. Of the competitions decided to date, tho following are the winners for the 1940 season :—Senior competition (Gilray Cup), University A; senior seven-a-side (Hayward Clip),; University A; junior competition (Williamson Cup), undecided; Junior seven-a-sido (Holler Cup), Air Force; third grade competition (Gymnastic Memorial Cup), Dunedin Technical High School A. The fallowing senior players have represented Otago against major associations, and are entitled to representative badges;—W. Carr, F. Brosnahan, 11. Bedford, 1. Sherwin, A. Cuthbert, C. Baird, D. White, L. Gurr, A. Hotting, D. Mathieson, M. Yule, B. Rye burn, A. Alldred, D. Stewart, E. Rennick, A. Jack, I. Campbell, M. Fisher, C. Garlick, J. Gardiner. The following junior grade players, who have represented their province in major association matches are entitled to junior representative badges:— Reeves, C. Johnston, W. Seymour, F. Austin, E. The Auckland Association recently conducted a successful secondary schools tournament with 12 entries. After an interesting series of games played in perfect weather, Auckland Grammar A and Palmerston North Hisrh School tied for the A section, and Mount Albert Grammar and Stratford Technical High School tied for the B section Auckland Grammar and Palmerston North had played a drawn game in the competition round, and at the call of time in the play-off the score was 4 all. After nearly 15 minutes extra play Grammar scored the winning goal. Mount Albert Grammar unexpectedly beat Stratford (holders) by .1 goals to 1. Auckland Grammar beat Mount Albert Grammar in the final by 7 goals to 1. The Auckland Grammar and Palmerston North game was worthy of the final, and it was unfortunate that thev were drawn in the same section.

The association's cup and representative badges arc to ho presented at a dance to be bold in the Embassy Palon on September 21. when it is hoped there will be a full muster of players and enthusiast- 1 to make the function a successful ending for the season.
