AMATEUR WRESTLING
OPEN AND NOVICE TOURNAMENT GOOD STANDARD REVEALED The open and novice amateur tournament staged in the Otago Wrestling Association’s gymnasium last week did not attract entries up to last year’s number, but when it is considered that 37 of the Otago amateurs are absent on active service, the number of competitors taking part was satisfactory, J. Morris, a former pupil of the Otago Association’s school, defeated some of the veterans, and won the qpen middle-weight division. Most interest centred in the bout between F. Keach (ex-New Zealand Jight-weight champion) and F. Freeman. Keach emerged the winner by the only fall after a well-wrestled contest. Keach seems to be wrestling better than ever, and shows to best advantage when he is fully extended, aa he was in his bout with Freeman. A good standard of wrestling was shown throughout, and the tournament should serve as a good work-out in preparation for the Otago championships which will be held at the end of the month. The results were:— NOVICE BANTAM. W. Shiels (Caversham) 1, A. Hargreaves (Caversham) 2. Only entries. Points decision, OPEN FEATHER. J. Donaldson 1, F. Reggitt 2. Only entries. Points decision.
