THE "OLD HOUSE"

A casualty of the war was the “ Old House ” of Too H at Poperinghe, razed to the ground by a flyer’s bomb during the German rush through Flanders and Northern France. In the “ Old House ” during the last Avar the Rev. P. B. Clayton (“Tubby”) conducted a club for soldiers—“ Everyman’s Club,” Talbot House, or “ Too H ” (in signallers’ language)—whose traditions of service and fellowship were thought too good to be lost when the war ended. The Toe H movement was established by Royal Charter, and before the present outbreak began had 1,520 units throughout the world, including 46 in New Zealand. In “ the Years Between ” the Old House, for members and friends of the movement, was a much revered place of pilgrimage. Too H to-day, in most parts of the Empire, is working for troops as a great expansion of its normal activities. Talbot Houses, following the first model, wore being established on the new war fronts in Europe till those collapsed, and it_ is hoped, with European and Australian co-operation, to have one in Egypt.
