HOUSE OF LORDS DAMAGED. fRUGBY. September I.o.—Among the notable b ll i 1 ding.s damaged by Nazi bombs in recent raids is tin 1 Ifopsc of Lords. An incendiary bomb si nick Hie Ilotise of Lords but the damage was slight and the bomb was quickly extinguished. Immediate response has been received to the Lord Mayor's appeal to relieve distress caused by the bombing of London. The Bank of England .sent £IO,OOO, the American Ambassador and each of the five great banks, Imperial Chemical Industries, Lever Brothers, and Unilever Ltd. each gave £5,000. The Lord Mayor of Brisbane sent a cable expressing the horror of the people of Queensland, who have opened a fund with' £IO.OOO from the Queensland patriotic fund. Tho central British war fund of Shanghai cabled £25,000. CIVIL SERVICE SALARY INCREASES. An official announcement about salary increases for the civil service and allied organisations such as the Railways, the I’, and T., Public Works, ami -Education is expected to bo made by the Government on Monday. Cabinet’s decision, following consideration at a Government caucus'this week, was communiealed to representatives of the services concerned by Mr Nash today.
