THE ‘SPORTS SPECIAL’

FINAL ISSUE TO-MORROW SOUTHERN-PIRATES MEETING FOR PREMIERSHIP To - morrow night’s ' Sports Special ’ will be the final issue for the 1940 season of this popular affiliation of the ‘ Evening Star.’ In a difficult season, with the war naturally absorbing more interest than sport, and a shortage of newsprint occasioned by that war, the management decided nevertheless to proceed with the journal, partly to give readers the benefit of the latest war news available between 4 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, and also to keep a large clientele abreast of what, after all, is a healthy phase of life in New Zealand. The public and the journal's contributors have backed the venture handsomely, indicating that the right course was pursued. The great event to-morrow, of course, is the fight for the Rugby premiership between Southern and Pirates, other adjuncts of interest being the Soccer and men’s hockey events, in the latter of which the premier team meets the Rest; the women’s hockey matches, Otago A and B teams versus South Otago ; a number of harrier sports meetings; and the Ashburton and Avondale races. An interesting magazine page will be provided, and the' latest war cables will be a feature. The ‘ Sports Special ” will be sold on the streets from 7 p.m.
