SOUTH OTAGO NOTES
[From Our Correspondent] AIR FORCE QUEEN. A large and representative meeting was held at Balcluthu last night to discuss ways and means of furthering the campaign of the Air Force Queen (.Miss Mary Pratt). Mr A. I. Miller, chairman of the Patriotic Committee, was in the chair, and practically every sporting organisation in the town was represented. Many suggestions were made for raising the £1,350 allocated to the Balclntha borough, and conveners were appointed to call meetings of their organisations and arrange functions. It was reported that gross takings last Saturday were £175 13s lid, and net profit £ll4 5s 2d. The Air Force Queen is getting excellent support throughout the whole of South Otago, and to-day two young ladies from Dunedin travelled all the way to Owaka to sell art union tickets to assist her campaign. School children and all organisations are working hard. BALCLUTHA HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY. _A meeting of the above w r as held last night, .Air G. W. Guest being in the chair. The meeting Avas called to consider the advisability of holding a spring show this year, and after discussion it was decided, owing to the many calls being made at the present time, to abandon the show this year as far as the society 1 is concerned. It was, however, agreed that an offer be made to the Air Force Queen Committee that if it cared to arrange a show in conjunction with some of its efforts members of the society would give all the assistance possible in the way of staging, exhibiting, judging, and in donations of flowers and plants for sale. This offer was later passed on to the public meeting .and was well received. SWIMMING CLUB. Air D. Lattimore presided over a good attendance at the annual meeting of the Balcnltha Swimming and Surf Life Saving Club. The annual report and balance sheet disclosed a good position. The finances showed a slight decrease on the previous year, but the position generally was very satisfactory. The senior vice-president, Air G. AUBride, was elected president, and several members paid tribute to the excellent work done by the retiring president. Other office-bearers elected were: Senior vicepresident, Air D. Aliss Jean Gold. It was decided that all members on active service remain members of the club. The delegates to the Otago Centre were instructed to press for the inclusion of all classes in the forthcoming country championships to be held at Alexandra. Air F. Bnllen pointed out that; as senior competition commenced at 17 years of age, those in the senior men’s class would not under present circumstances he required for military service for some years. If eliminated from competition he feltf that swimming would suffer. Mr Clark spoke on similar lines. The opening of the season was left to the committee to arrange. RIFLE SHOOTING. The ißalclutha Aliniature (Rifle Club concluded the 1940 season on Wednesday night, when there was a good attendance. Top scorer was C, Falconer with 80, with N. Alitchell next with 79. Other scores were; A. Hayward, G. Sinclair 78, W. Sloan 77, A. Low, L. 8011, \. Rutherford, S. D. Alacdonald, T. AUCristall 76, L. Thomson, J. Barclay, R. Chalmers, R. Arbnthnott 75. J. R. Sinclair 8, J. Barclay 9, A. Roger 10. At the conclusion of the shoot a social evening was held, when the president of the club (Air R. Chalmers) presented the various trophies Avon during the season, and extended congratulations to the winners. Those who received trophies were; R. Arbnthnott, jjin., A grade championship and also aggregate; L. Thomson, (B grade championship and aggregate; D. AUFeeters, C grade championship and aggregate. TABLE TENNIS. The interclub competitions under the auspices of the South Otago Table Tennis Association have concluded. In A grade, Railway A -and B are level with 134 points each. The former Avon 13 of 17 matches played, lost three and drew 1, Avlule Railway B Avon 12, lost tAvo, and drew three. Football A came next Avith 11 points; Kaitangata and Football B secured lavo competition points each. In B grade Benhar Avon Avith 14J points, Avinning 14 of 18 games played, losing three, and drawing one. Methodist Avas runner-up with 134 points. Avon 13. lost four, dreAv one. Fire Brigade was third Avith 12 points (11-5-2). Stirling (84 points), Railway (74), Kaitangata (5), and P. and T. (2) were the other competitors. Football aa'o n the C grade Avith 17 points. It played 21 matches, Avon 14, and lost four. Benhar came next Avith 14 points (14-7), Methodist (6-15), ißov Scouts (2-19). On Friday and Saturday nights of next week the South Otago championships and handicap tournament aaull be held in the Railway Hall. A grade singles and doubles and also B grade singles and doubles Avill be held, in addition to handicap singles and doubles.
