A HOLIDAY ADVENTURE
In the meantime the boys had armed themselves with a huge hook attached to a thick line and having a big bit of meat on the end of it as bait. When darkness fell they sailed on their raft along under the steep cliff where the lake was deepest. By the light of the moon they could" see a giant pike approach and snap at the bait. It was certainly more than a yard long; might it not be the one that had snatched their -goose away? Suddenly like lightning the pike vanished.
Right down, in the clark depths where the moonlight did not reach, there was something moving. Paul let the hook sink further down and then there was a violent movement in the water. Great white jaws opened and the hook disappeared. The next instant there was a terrific tug at the raft; as a matter of fact they had thought it wise to wind the line round one of the planks. And then the mysterious monster set off with the frail raft out into the middle of the lake. The long

line had run quite out and it was quite impossible to haul it in. Now and then it slackened a bit and then followed some violent tugs nearly causing ' the whole thing to capsize. But gradually the strength of the monster gave out, Tl?e raft was now right over on the opposite shore where there was a flat sandy bottom with lots of deep holes. In one of these the monster sought refuge. The boys rowed the raft in to land and made the line fast to a big tall tree. (To be concluded nest week).
