EX-SOLDIERS’ BURIAL
GRANTS BY PENSIONS DEPARTMENT In certain cases an adequate grant is available from'the War Pensions Department to cover the burial expenses of ex-servicemen who die in indigent circumstances, and the experience of the Dunedin Returned Soldiers’ Association would appear to indicate that many relatives of ex-servicemen are not familiar with the procedure to be followed to obtain this grant. In the first, place, it is expressly laid down that the grant is in respect ' to the ex-serviceman who dies without leaving any estate or finance to cover his funeral expenses, and who leaves dependents with or without children not m a poistion to pay funeral expenses. In all cases where death occurs, the application for the grant must be made to the local office of the Social Security Department, and must be made prior to the burial of the ex-serviceman that is, before the funeral arrangements are finalised with the undertaker. The amount of the grant is sufficient to arrange for a funeral such as anyone would wish, but it must be remembered that the grant is only made where the ex-serviceman or woman and dependents are in indigent circumstances. In all cases any local branch of the R.S.A. will be willing to give any needed advice.
