CHOIR AND DRAMA

METHODIST BIBLE CLASSES The solid support given the Methodist Bible classes for the opening of their choir and drama festival at the Concert. Chamber Inst night was sufficient indication of the merit of the items. The chairman the Rev. A. K. Jefferson, in his address, commented on the fact that this festival was, so far. peculiar to Dunedin. It was initiated in 1928

by the girls’ Bibit classes, ami was then confined to choirs only. Two years later the Young Men’s Union was included, and the drama festival was initiated in the year after that. The increasing support necessitated the use of largei halls, and since 1937 it had been held in the Concert Chamber. Judging the choirs this year is Dr T Vernon Griffiths, while Mr Roland Watson is adjudicating in the drama section. Last night, choirs sang their own choice of items. On Saturday, the final night, the test piece set by Dr Griffiths will be ‘The Pigtail’ (JMarkham Lee). Six choirs were heard last night, and three plays were staged. The programme was as follows : Glenavbn Choir, ‘ Manx Fisherman Song,’ conducted by Mr C]iff Vince; Dundas Street Choir, ‘When* I Survey the Wondrous Cross.’ conducted by Mr M _ Armstrong: Trinitv, ‘Trial Scene.’ from ‘Merchant of Venice.’ produced ( bv Mr D.
