COMMUNITY SING AT MOSGIEL

On Monday evening the Mosgiel Businessmen’s Association staged the first anniversary and birthday sing, the Coronation Hall being-well filled. The sing leaders (Messrs E. W. Cate and Archibald M'Lean) and the pianist (Mr E. C. Skinner) officiated through a lengthy programme. Assisting artists who contributed very enjoyable numbers were Airs Barnett (vocal), Miss E. Frew (elocution), Messrs M'Kinlay and W. A. Fmnie (vocal), Mr T. R. Thomson (conjuring), Mr J., Milne .(vocal), Messrs F. and N. Cooper (instrumental). Mrs A. Walmsley and Miss F. Hicks were the accompanists. A mock court was conducted by Messrs W. S. Scott and N. C. Connor.

During the evening the president (Air -E. J. Mason), on behalf of the committee, presented to Messrs Cate, M'Lean, and Skinner small gifts in appreciation of their work during the past year. The Pi esident spoke of the amount of organising work done during the past year by the committee members, and particularly Mr J. J: Prosser (secretary) and Mr F. Cheyne (past president). •’The birthday cake, weighing 341 b, was' exhibited on the stage. Mrs AY. P. Hartstonge (mayoress) lit the candle. Miss A. Cheyne extinguished it. and Mrs E. J. Mason cut the cake. Pieces were distributed to everyone in the audience and paper hats distributed among the children. Guests of .the evening were members of the South Dunedin Businessmen’s Association, Mr AUNamara (president), Mr Vaughan (committee), Mr Beveridge (secretary), and Mrs Beveridge. On r behalf of the guests Mr Beveridge thanked the Mosgiel Businessmen’s Committee for the invitation, and said he hoped to be present when 50 candles were lit on the cake. Mr Fish, South Dunedin song leader, conducted one of the items. ROLL THE BARREL DERBY. Prior to the community sing a barrelrolling Derby in aid of soldiers’ parcel fund was conducted in Mosgiel by the Businessmen’s Association. The announcer (Air L. A. Alagee) gave the weights and pedigrees of the starters in the Derby. Air A. F. Quelch (Hospital Board representative) was the winner. The other starters were Air W. P. Hartstonge (Alayor of Alosgiel), Air G. Stevenson (chairman Taieri County), Air R. L. Fairmaid (president Alosgiel Rotary Club), Air J. F. Frew, and Air E. J. Mason (president Alosgiel Businessmen’s Association). With donations added the raffle will net over £ls to the parcel fund. Afiss B. Tunzleman was the winner 6f the hamper, the raffle being drawn on the stage in the hall in the presence of the Police Department.
