LAWN TENNIS
PINE HILL CLUB The annual meeting of the above club was held recently, when the president (Mr A. C. Notman) presided over a good attendance of members. In moving the adoption of the annual report, the Chairman congratulated the club on the past season’s activities, and expressed the hope that, in spite of the drain on the personnel of all sporting bodies owing to the present hostilities, the coming season would prove as successful as the last. During the course of proceedings Miss Pat Beard was presented with the trophy given by Mr P. George for presentation to the most improved player in the club. In the absence of Mr George, the presentation was made by Mr D. L. Ritchie, patron of the club. The opportunity was also taken to present Mr R. W. OTAGO ASSOCIATION
The fifty-fourth annual report of the Otago Association says it is gratifying to record that the past season, in spite of the war, was a very successful one. Many difficulties would have to be faced in the coming year, as a largo number of players would be on active service; and while tho association’s activities would no doubt have to be considerably modified, it was felt that there was an obligation to keep the game going so that the men who were away could take it up again on their return. The report notes with satisfaction that the game continues to progress in the primary and secondary schools, and remarks that the improvement noticeable among the young players augurs well for the future of lawn tennis in Otago. The coaching of promising players nominated by the clubs had again been carried out by Mr T. Brooks in a very painstaking manner. The financial position in present circumstances could be considered quite satisfactory, and it was hoped to place the finances in an improved position when the war was over. Tlie various tournaments and competitions held during the year had been attended by a largo measure of success.
