Gladstone Hughes, of St.' Andrew’s Church, Auckland, and for some years minister _of Chalmer# Church, Timaru, has received a unanimous call to St. John’s Church, Wellington. Mr John Higgins, engineer to th# Grey County Conned, last month completed 60 years’ service with the council. This is considered to be a record for New Zealand in local body administration. Captain J. Brooke White, M.S.C., B. A.M.1.C.E., New Zealand Staff Corps, who left with the Second Echelon attached to the Railway Construction Company, has been appointed to Camberley Staff College, England. Advice has been received that Lieu-tenant-commander R. C. GordonSmith, D.S.C., who was seriously wounded in the first battle of Narvik, died from his injuries on July 17. He was navigating officer of H.M.S. Hydy. He was married in 1937 to Miss Anne Morris, a granddaughter of the late Mr and Mrs John Anderson, of “ Inveresk,” Armagh street, Christchurch. _ Dr Edgar P. Thomson, who for .some time past has been in charge of the Pathological Department at the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, is now a member of the Australian Imperial Force with the rank of major, and is a director of the pathology department of the medical branch of the force. Major Thomson, who is a son of • Mr Fred and the late Mrs Thomson, of Christchurch, attended the Southland Boys’ High School from 1916 to 1920, and graduated at Otago University in 1926. Major C. W. KimbelJ, R.A.M.C., who is well known in Christchurch, is a prisoner of war in Germany. Advice to this effect has been received by his uncle, Mr H. G. Livingstone. The message adds that Major Kimbell is in good health. He is a son of the lato Mr A. H. Kimbell, former Under-Sec-retary of Mines. Major Kimbell went to France with the British Expeditionary Force as a surgeon, and was left behind at the evacuation of Dunkirk. Major Kimbell obtained his degree at the Otago University, and for a time was on the staff of the Christchurch Public Hospital, leaving that position to take a post-graduate course in London, where he obtained the degrees of P.R.C.S. and M.C.O.G. Major Kimbell has a brother, Dr N. Kimbell, who is &• medical officer in the Royal Air Force, with the rank of flight-lieutenant. Naval Reserve Headquarters advise a group for active service consisting of Able Seamen J. W. Lamont, C. V. R. Adams, R. J. J. Eccles, L. G. Glue, 0 E. Knox, J. W. Henry, and A. A. . L. Watt left by this morning’s express for the north. Staying at the City Hotel are Mr A,Smith (Auckland), Mr E. Cole (Wanganui), Mr D. C. Gumming (Wellington), Mr and Mrs M. F. Grace (Invercargill). Arrivals at Wain’s Hotel include Mr P. E. Russell (Auckland). Mr F. Retter (Palmerston North), Mr R. Smith (Wellington), Mr P. S. Dyer (Christchurch), Mr D. J. Ross (Hillgrove), Mrs R. E. Anderson (Ashburton), Mr J. A. Cameron, Mr and Mrs W. Retter, Mr N. Retter (Invercargill). On the guest list at the Carlton Hotel are Mr and Mrs H. A. Wilson, Mr J# Binstead, Mr €. H.
