COTTAGES FOR AGED
CHRISTCHURCH SCHEME FAVOURED LAND NOT YET AVAILABLE A suggestion that the council might consider a housing scheme, its objective being the provision of cottages tor pensioners and aged couples, was made by Cr D. C. Cameron to the City council last night, the matter arising from a clause in the Finance Committee’s report which approved the acceptance of a iinal tender for a house, thus concluding the council’s' present housing scheme. In Christchurch, Cr Cameron said, he had the pleasure of inspecting some pensioner’s cottages which were portion of that City council’s latest housing scheme. Rentals were ]os for couples, and 12s Gd for single pensioners. The council in Christchurch has approached the Government for a further £25.00.0 to extend the scheme. “ I think, notwithstanding the increased costs to this council we should' give the matter serious consideration now that we have finished w.th the major scheme,” he said. All members were enthusiastic iu support of such a scheme, stated the mayor (Mr A. H. Allen) but in considering it for Dunedin the vital factor was securing suitable land. Unlike Christchurch, Dunedin did not have a groat deal of flat land available for such a scheme. The land, with the exception of a few odd sections hero and there, was not available. However, be bad been in communication with a man who had a block of land of seven and a-lmlf acres. Me had asked if the land could he placed under offer to the council. The council, stated the mayor, would support such a scheme as soon as laud was available.
