Major-general Sir John Davidson has been appointed deputy-chairman of the Board of Directors of Dalgety and Co. Ltd., according to advice received, by the New Zealand superintendent of the company. Mr Alfred Hill, musician and com* . poser, who has been living in Auckland for some months,- is a visitor to Wellington. Cabled advice has been received that the Rt. Rev. Monsignor C. Morkane, who has been visiting Europe and England, has arrived in Canada and is on his way to New York. ...... At the annual meeting last night of the Kiwi Amateur Swimming Club the chairman (Mr S. Brown) expressed the regret of all members at the loss sustained during the year by the death of Mr P. H. C. Boulton. Mr Brown said that Mr Boulton had been a vice-presi-dent and deputy-chairman of the club* and he had done outstanding work, especially in the encouragement of the younger swimmers. With the Fleet Air Arm he did his first training on His Majesty’s aircraft carrier Hermes, and later served for a period on the recently-torpedoed aircraft carrier Courageous. From the Courageous he was transferred for special training. The Victoria University College Conncil last night adopted the nomination by the Professorial Board of T. CLarking and E. I. Robertson as candidates for the Cecil Rhodes Scholarship from the college. Having been unable to find a ship to take him to India, the Rt. Rev. T. E. Riddle, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand' has returned to Auckland. Mr Riddle left by' the Mariposa for Sydney just before Eng- • laud’s declaration that .a state of war existed! with Germany, and he found on arrival at Melbourne that the shipping services to India had been considerably reduced. Mr Riddle represented his church as fraternal delegate to tho triennial assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Australia, and then decided to postpone his . plans for returning to India, whence he came to New Zealand, 'and came back to Auckland. He will fulfil various duties of his office until November, when he hopes to be able to arrange a passage to India. ■ ,

The following military appointments were notified! in last night’s issue of the ' Gazette ’Colonel R. Miles, of tho Regiment of Royal New Zealand Artillery, relinquishes the appointment of General Staff officer (staff duties), and is appointed Quartermaster-General. Colonel 0. H. Mead, New Zealand Staff Corps, relinquishes the-appointment of Adjutant and Quartermaster-General, and is appointed Adjutant-General.--Both officers will retain their appointments on the Army Board. In the recent examinations for a B certificate in the Officers’ Training Corps at the St. Andrew’s University, Mr William Jordan, jun. (son .of the High Commissioner) secured the highest number of marks and was awarded the silver trophy which is given to the officer cadet with the most successful pass. The B certificate is the highest available to candidate officers.. Mr Jordan, jun., has been posted to the reserve of the Royal New Zealand Air Forbe, and his services are thus available in the Royal Air Force. He was for four years a member of the. Royal Air Force, where he studied, wireless electricity. A Wanganui Association message r*« cords the death of the Rev. John Paterson, M.A., minister of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Stratford, and. forraelv of St. Paul’s Church, Wanganui. The deceased had not enjoyed good health for some years. He went to Wanganui for treatment. Born a* Kempsey, New South Wales, and.educated at Svdney, his first charge was Broken Hill. Later he came to New Zealand to St. Paul’s Church, Christ* church, and on to Wanganui in 1924. He was a past master in the Masom* fraternity. ■ > ,
