MARRIAGES SOAR
HIGH SEPTEMBER TOTAL VITAL STATISTICS The war has unquestionably hastened marriages throughout New Zealand and in Dunedin; tho returns for the month of September are the highest known for that month. Usually a quiet month, this year September has been as busy almost as any ;in which Easter has fallen or even the Christmas period. Those two rush periods in the last 12 months have been responsible for 116 and 147 marriages respectively, and September comes very close with a total of 114, nearly double last year’s registration of 67.
The war, however, cannot be said to be responsible for the increases shown in the other two sections of vital statistics. Births are up by 17, and deaths by 7. For the three mouths ended today marriages are over and above tho corresponding three months of last year by 37, and births by 22. Deaths, however, show a decrease of eight. The respective figures are;—■ —For tho Month.— 1938. 1939. Births ... ... ... 130 147 Deaths 85 92 Marriages 67 114 —For the Quarter. — Births 370 392 Deaths 346 326 Marriages 190 227
