WET CANTEENS
PROTEST FROM CHURCH OF CHRIST ANNUAL MEETING CF NORTH-EAST VALLEY MEMBERS A resolution that a protest be forwarded to the Minister of Defence against any suggestion to introduce wet canteens in the military camps was reached at the fifty-second annual meeting of the North-east Valley Church of Christ, held last night. The principal, Mr A. L. Haddon, presided. In addition to the resolution it was stated that individual protests were also to be forwarded to the Minister, particularly from mothers who were most concerned about the matter. Reporting on the year’s work, the secretary, Mr W. Brown, expressed thanks to the minister (Mr Haddon) for the fine standard of addresses given during the year, and for the kindness and understanding displayed by him. Thanks were also extended the student assistants—Messrs N. T. Haig and R. S. Marshall, Despite sicknesses, church attendances had been well maintained, and the readiness of women members of the congregation to co-operate at all times was warmly commended. The Bible School superintendent, Mr H. M. Smith, reported that the school had had a successful year, with outstanding successes _in the Dominion Scripture examinations. . The report of the Ladies’ Society mentioned the long illness of the president, Mrs A. Green. A message of sympathy was conveyed to her. ■ The treasurer’s report was presented by Mr L. Benjamin. It showed a credit "balance of £l6 on the year’s work. Support had been given to all Dominion activities of the church and to the special Centennial fund. The debt of the now church building had been reduced to £750. A new concrete wall had been erected at a cost of nearly £IOO. The excess of assets over liabilities was £2,6C8 18s 2d. '
