[By Philatelist.} STAMPS OF THIRTY-FIVE NOTED AMERICANS. Washington. Postmaster - General James A. Farley has authorised a special series of postage stamps in honour of 35 Americans who achieved fame in the arts and sciences. Those to be honoured: — Authors. —Ralph Waldo Emerson, Samuel L. (Mark Twain) Clemens, Washington Irving, Louisa May Alcott, and James Fenimore Cooper. Poets. —Henry W. Longfellow, James Whitcomb Riley, Walt Whitman, John Greenleaf Whittier, and James Russell Lowell. Artists.—James Abbott M‘Neill Whistler, Daniel Chester French, Augustus Saint-Gaudens, Gilbert Charles Stuart, and Frederic Remington. Educators.—Horace Mann, Charles W. Elliot, Booker T. Washington, Frances E. Willard, and Mark Hopkins. Inventors.—Alexander Graham Bell, Eli Whitney, Samuel F. B. Morse, Elias Howe, and Cyrus H. M'Cormick. Composers. —John Philip Sousa, Edward A, M‘Dowell, Stephen Collins Foster, Victor Herbert, and Ethelbert Nevin. Natural and Social Scientists.— Luther Burbank; Dr Crawford W. Long, Dr Walter Reed, John James Audubon, and Jane Addams. It is unlikely that any of the stamps will be placed on sale before early next year. NEW TURKISH STAMPS. The Turkish postal authorities have issued a series of six stamps in celebration of the American Independence. Two identical stamps of seven and ahalf and twelve and a-half piastres respectively show tho portraits of Kemal Ataturk and of George Washington, the founders of the Turkish and of the American democracies. Two other stamps of throe and eight piastres show Ismot I noun and Franklin Roosevelt, the present Presidents of the two countries. Of tho other two stamps of two and a-half and six piastres are reproduced the Turkish and the American flags borne by one staff. Tho stamps with the portraits of Ataturk and George WashiTiglon, as well as the two and a-half piastre stamp with the flags, are for international circulation. The three piastre stamps with the portrait of Inonu and Roosevelt, as well as the six piastre stamp with the two flags,_ are for use in the country, and the eight piastre stamp with Inonu and Roosevelt is for circulation in the Balkan Union. MARSHALS OF FRANCE. Have you over thought of working out a series of subjects for a set of postage stamps? It can be quite an entertaining occupation for an odd half-
hour or so. There is a proposal before the French Minister of Posts to issue a series in honour of the Marshals of France. What would be your choice of a dozen among the Marshals who have won fame?
