Colonel A. E. Loach left this morning; on his return to Christchurch. Messrs P. .0. Smellie and C. L. Calvert left this morning to attend a meeting at Wellington of the executive of the Associated Chambers of Commerce^ Drs John Fulton and Raymond Kirk left yesterday for Burnham military; camp to commence duty with tha special military force. Mr Walter Russell Wood will act a# judge of the South Island elimination festival of the British Drama League, to be held at Oamaru bn October 7. The president of the Otago Cricket Association (Mr A. H. Allen) referred at the annual meeting of that body last night to the loss which the game had sustained by the deaths during the year of Mr C. W. Rattray, Mr James Baker, and Mr R. Cherry, all of whom had given great service to Otago_ cricket. After 36 years’ service with the Go-i vemment, principally in the Justice Department, Mr G. N. Morris, stipendiary magistrate at Whangarei, retired on superannuation yesterday and will take up his residence at Auckland. Mr Morris, who has been stationed at Whangarei for the past 10 years, will be succeeded by Mr Raymond Ferner, S.M.
Mr Manuel Raymond has arrived at Wellington to take up his appointment as director of the cabaret orchestra at the National Centennial. He was musical director at the New Zealand and South Seas Exhibition at Dunedin in 1925-26, and afterwards conducted orchestras at mq.ny wellknbwn places of entertainment in London.
Dr J. A. Watson has been appointed port health officer at Auckland. He ha» acted in this capacity at various times during the past 10 years. Provision has been made for the position to be kept open for Dr Watson while he is on duty with the Royal Naval Vo!uu-> teer Reserve.
At a meeting of the executive of the Otago Kennel Club last night a presentation was made to Mr J. D,_ Hanning, who has resigned the position of secretary and treasurer, which he has held for the past two years. Bidding him farewell, the president of the club (Mr J. D. Mercer) presented Mr Hanning with an illuminated address and a cheque. Other members of the executive made eulogistic reference-to Mr Hanning and his work.. Mr Hanning, who has been appointed secretary of the Chamber-of Commerce, suitably replied. Mr J. F. Lang, 8.C0m., has been appointed secretary and treasurer of the Kennel Club. -
Yesterday afternoon the chief postmaster CMr N. R. M'lsaac) presented Mr J. L. Mehalski, a telegraphist, in the service, perhaps more generally known as an active follower of Rugby, with a chiming clock and a set of glassware from the staff, as a mark of esteem on the eve of his marriage. The chief postmaster (Mr N. R. M‘lsaac) has been advised-thak owing to the state of emergency existing his retirement, which was scheduled to take effect from next month, must be postponed in the meantime. Sir John Reed, who reached the statutory retiring' age in 1936, finally retires from the Supreme Court Bench on September 30.—Press Association. The staff of Messrs Arthur M‘Kae and Co. met to bid good-bye to Mr H. H. Parata, who left yesterday tor Burnham. Presenting Mr Parata with a wristlet watch on behalf of the staff, Mr M'Rae spoke of. the sterling qualities of Mf Parata, and wished him a speedy and safe return. Mr E. H. Lippert, Mr H. E. R. Woodhead, and Mr K. Tulloch also referred briefly to their pleasant business associations with Mr Parata, who suitably replied, A Press Association cable message from London states'that the King ha* appointed Group Captain the Hon.
