PRICE INCREASES

TOBACCO AND CIGARETTES UP SANCTIONED ADVANCES NOW IN OPERATION When the man in the street has to pay out another Id, 2d, or 3d at the tobacconist for his particular . brand of cigarette or tobacco, he must do so with a smile and remember that the increased cost is his individual contribution towards the war finances. From noon today, cigarettes were, advanced by 1d for 10 and tobacco by 3d for a 2oz tin. These increases were sanctioned this morning by the Minister in Industries and Commerce (Hon. I). G. Sullivan) as the consequence of the new duties on all tobaccos, and in pursuance of the authority contained in the Price Stabilsation Emergency Regulations. The Minister announced that the Price Tribunal had investigated the position and the advances were permitted. Some retail tobacconists apparently were under the impresson that the increased price was to operate as from festerdny morning, but actually this was not so. Since then these tradespeople have learned of their mistake and where possible have made a refund on the overcharge. . No decision concerning the price of spirits or beer, or to what extent they will be affected, has yet been received in the city, but it is. expected that information’ to this end will come from Wellington within the course of the next day or so.
