CRICKET

ALBION CLUB Tho adjourned annual meeting of tho above club held) last night was attended by a fair number of members. Mr i . N. Binney presided. Trior to opening the business, tlm president (Mr L. J. Joe!) informed the meeting that ho had decided to retue form active participation in club activities, and amid expressions of regret and eulogies of his services, ho vacated the chair to Mr Binney. . Reference was then made- by the chairman to the death of Mr J- U Q “ CI > an old member of tho club, and membeis stood in silence as a marls of respect. ANNUAL REPORT. Results of the performances of the teams in competition last year weie very gratifying, stated the annual report. However, it had not appeared at times as if members had taken sunicicnt advantage of all the facilities provided for cricket. It was hoped this would be remedied l . One of the most outstanding events have been the seventyfifth anniversary celebrations of tho club. Financially, the season’s operations had not been quite as successful as social functions, as the jubilee celebrations had not paid their way, leaving a considerable deficit in funds. Members had been tardy in meeting their subscription obligations. Teams had performed creditably throughout the season, said the Chairman in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet, but ho expressed tho opinion that the first eleven was somewhat slow in getting into its stride. Finance was not encouraging, but with members’ assistance there was an optimistic future, with probably a credit balance. He said the club had boon in worse positions before, and had recovered. It was gratifying to know tiiat no largo outlay was needed for new material. Under the prevailing conditions, with the likelihood of some players being, drawn from teams, there were likely to be some new situations, he concluded, but he urged members to try to increase the numbers of players. ft would have to be decided what the club would do in the future owing to tlie financial position and the high rental of the club ground, said Mr J. H. Duncan, speaking to the report. It would perhaps be possible to obtain a smaller rental for the ground; other alternatives were to move to the open ground at Logan Park, or back to tho North Ground. Through finance was not in as good a position ns was desirable, there was no ncwl for club members to be disheartened said the treasurer (Mr G. A. Bertensliaw) in presenting tho balance sheet

The report and balance sheet were adopted. ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

It was suggested that as far as possible country games should be arranged, and this was adopted. UMPIRES' ASSOCIATION Air G. APQueen presided at the annual meeting last night of the Otago Cricket Umpires’ Association. There ■was a fair attendance. The Chairman, in moving the adoption of the annual report and balance sheet, deplored the shortage of umpires last season, as the result of which some of the matches were not served. Old players should realise that it was their duty to put something back into the game from which ■ they themselves had derived so much pleasure and profit. Appeals to this effect had been made, but with little or no result. The blame lay in part on the clubs, which should be in a position to prevail upon their members when retiring from active cricket to join the association. The systcip of awarding fielding points had again been carried out, and it seemed to be on the right lines, as the champion team usually won the contest. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, the president of the Otago Cricket Association ; chairman, Air G. APQueen; vice-chairmen, Messrs A. APKay and J. Porteous; secretary and treasurer, Air AV. A. Rowland; committee—Alessrs L. Diehl, J. S. Douglas, and R. Oxley; delegate to the association, Air W. A. Rowland; selector, Air AV. A. Rowland; auditor, Air J. Porteous. Three new members were elected, including Messrs J. Young (Christchurch) and E. H. Dickie (Hamilton). It was decided to revert to the old system of awarding short runs. It was agreed to recommend to tl\c Cricket Association that the proper marking of Tonga Park and the North Ground should be carried out. Air AV. Butler was elected a life member.
