INTOXICATED MOTORISTS
FOUR WEEK-END ARRESTS MAGISTRATE CONSIDERS INCREASING SENTENCES [Per United Press Association.] AUCKLAND, September 20. “ So many ot : these cases are coming before the court —there were four arrests last week-end—that 1 think the only thing to consider is whether the sentences in such cases should be increased,” said Mr Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court in sentencing to two weeks’ imprisonment Wilfred Victor Holliday (38), a carpenter, who pleaded guilty to a charge of intoxication while in charge of a motor car in Queen street on Sunday night at 11.37. The police said the car was driven in an erratic manner and collided with the safety zone. Nothing previously was known against Holliday. Defending counsel, Mr Matthews, said Holliday was employed by a contractor on emergency work for the yefence Department, and his services were urgently required. Ho had spent Saturday in a dentist’s chair, and, teeiincj unwell on Sunday, took a little liquor. The collision occurred during rnin, and was not attributable to can see no reason for excluding this case from one where imprisonment should be 'ordered,” said the Magistrate. • The defendant’s license was cancelled for two years.
